On the northeast tip of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington lies one of the most idyllic little communities in the entire Pacific Northwest. Nowhere else can you find such a picturesque place renowned for its incredible views of the Puget Sound, old Victorian homes, and an artsy vibe.

Port Townsend was first settled back in 1851, but the bay itself was named by Captain George Vancouver in 1792 in honor of his friend, the Marquis of Townsend. The town is nicknamed the City of Dreams, as well as the “Key City,” due to the once commonly held belief that Port Townsend would ascend to become the most important and largest port on the West Coast. When you book an RV in Port Townsend now, you will see that these plans never came to fruition. What it became instead is a charming little seaport used as a ferry port for travelers heading to and from the many islands in the Puget Sound. Tourism plays a major role in this community's livelihood, attracting people from all over for a variety of reasons.

When you rent an RV in Port Townsend, you can take the trip of your dreams, exploring nearby national parks, hidden beaches, cultural celebrations like the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival, and major cities such as Olympia to the south and Seattle to the east.

Anderson Lake State Park is one such place, several minutes’ drive south of town. This truly amazing nature park has gently rolling hills surrounding Anderson Lake itself. On the lake, you can enjoy some great fishing on a boat or swim around in its refreshing waters. Hiking, cycling, and horseback riding are all welcomed on the parks elaborate trail system.

On the next peninsula over from Port Townsend, this park is large with lush forests and some of the most incredible beaches in the state. Shine Tidelands State Park is south of town, providing visitors with even more outdoor wilderness to explore. Five thousand feet of prime beachfront access is one of the reasons to bring your Port Townsend motorhome rental to the park, along with great birdwatching, picnic spots, wildlife viewing, fishing, and windsurfing on the Puget Sound.

The most obvious suggestion for those who don’t know where to go next with their Port Townsend RV rental is Olympic National Park. This world-famous national park can be seen from across the sound all the way in Seattle, with towering, icy peaks that take your breath away. Lush rainforests, rugged peaks, rocky shores teeming with life, and just about every other possible ecosystem can be found in this sprawling park, and hiking through is one of the best ways to get a feel for it. You can climb to the summit of these snowy giants, or camp out at one of its many camping facilities.

RV Parks

Few states are more ideal places to rent an RV than Washington, and for that reason, there are lots of campgrounds no matter what corner of the state you find yourself in. Several state parks in the Port Townsend area are accommodating of recreational vehicle camping, like Anderson Lake State Park, Fort Townsend State Park, Fort Flagler State Park, and a few others.

The Jefferson County Fairgrounds could be a nice place to camp, no matter the time of year, although being there for the Jefferson County Fair in August is truly a treat. The fairground RV park is in the middle of town, walking distance from many of the best restaurants, shops, and museums.
