Serving as the seat of Calhoun County, Port Lavaca is a lively coastal city on the outskirts of Victoria. It was founded following the Great Comanche Raid of 1840 that destroyed the former settlement of Linnville, with Lavaca being established in its wake. Subsequent hurricanes all impacted the fortunes of the region, with Lavaca eventually taking over from Indianola as the county seat following the latter’s obliteration in 1886.

Today, Port Lavaca serves as a gateway to the wildlife refuges and fishing lakes along the Gulf Coast of Texas, making it a great place to rent an RV. It’s well served by RV campgrounds while being just over two hours’ drive from both Houston and San Antonio.

Discover Port Lavaca

The Great Outdoors

Book a motorhome rental in Port Lavaca and drive to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, which sprawls across more than 114,000 acres on San Antonio Bay. It was established in 1937 as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds, with herons, whooping cranes and roseate spoonbills all regularly spotted. Bobcats and collared peccaries also inhabit the grasslands, together with American alligators that lurk in the freshwater marshes.

Just across the bay from the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is Matagorda Island, a 38-mile-long barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s the traditional homeland of the Karankawa Indians and only accessible by boat, with its northeastern section protected within the Matagorda Island State Park and the remainder forming the Matagorda Island National Wildlife Refuge and State Natural Area. Aside from its untouched natural beauty, it supports a wide variety of migratory birds, many of which are threatened or endangered, with a mid-19th-century lighthouse standing at its northern end.

A short drive south of Port Lavaca lies Indianola, a once-thriving port on the edge of Powderhorn Lake. It’s a popular fishing destination, with redfish, trout, and flounder regularly caught along the grassy shorelines here. Kayaking and boating are the main means of fishing, with alligators also inhabiting the lake waters. En route to Powderhorn Lake, make a point of stopping at the Indianola Texas State Historical Marker to gain an insight into the story behind the settlement.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Port Lavaca and pull into one of the concrete RV sites at the Texas Lakeside RV Resort. Select between their 30 or 50-amp service, then take advantage of the outdoor swimming pool, clubhouse, laundry facilities, and fitness center, so you never have to miss a workout.

Also nearby is the Lonestar RV Park, which has a range of pull-through and back-in sites to select from on the shores of Lavaca Bay. There’s a 100-foot fishing pier, a recreation room, and an on-site laundry, with a convenience store also located on the property if you need to pick up any essentials.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Port Lavaca and head to the Calhoun County Museum, which details the fascinating history of the Texas Gulf Coast. Explore the exhibitions about LaSalle’s fated expedition to the New World and how the nearby town of Indianola was destroyed during the 1886 hurricane. A Fresnel lens from the lighthouse on Matagorda Island is also on show, having guided ships along the coast from 1873 until 1977.

While exploring Port Lavaca, make a point of visiting the Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse, which is the only screw-pile type lighthouse to still stand on the Texas Gulf Coast. It was constructed in the late 1850s, and a red glass chimney was installed over the lantern to differentiate it from the Matagorda Island Lighthouse. While it originally stood on the bay, it now rests on the edge of Port Lavaca overlooking the Fishing Pier Park and just a short stroll from the Lavaca Bay Causeway.

Also nearby is the Lighthouse Beach, a popular recreational area for families thanks to its sandy beach, children’s playground, and splash pad. There are numerous picnic tables where you can settle in for lunch, as well as a waterfront boardwalk for enjoying the Lavaca Bay views. If you’re visiting during the summer months, head to the public swimming pool, which also features diving boards at various heights.
