Ponder is a tiny town on the outskirts of Denton, just outside of the “Golden Triangle of North Texas” which consists of Fort Worth and Dallas in addition to Denton. Named for W. A. Ponder, a prosperous landowner, the town was first settled in the mid 19th century, before becoming a full-fledged town when the first railroads arrived towards the latter half of the century. What was originally an agrarian mill town slowly developed into a lively enclave with small businesses and a steadily growing population.

These days, Ponder has largely retained its distinct countryside feel, while also becoming a suburban bedroom community for the nearby city of Denton. Most of the town’s people commute to larger cities in the area, and tourism has taken a major role in the town-wide economy. When you book an RV in Ponder, you won’t be limited to Ponder or the Dallas metropolitan area for that matter; you can travel far and wide to see the mind-boggling natural beauty of The Lone Star State, from the rolling prairies and lush forests of East Texas to the tranquil, ancient deserts in the west.

Discover Ponder

The Great Outdoors

There is nearly infinite potential to see the great state of Texas when you rent an RV in Ponder, like nearby Ray Roberts Lake State Park north of Denton. There you can ride bicycles, hike, or go horseback riding on peaceful paths circling the park, or sit on the sandy beaches while watching the sun set or rise. Swimming, boating, and fishing are popular pastimes for those staying at the state park.

If you head north on Interstate 35, you can visit Lake Murray State Park, a dreamy recreational area that perfectly encapsulates the lake for which it's named. Lake Murray State Park is just over the border in southern Oklahoma and is the largest and oldest park in the state. There is a state-operated lodge and resort on the side of the lake, complete with rental cabins and plenty of campsites for you and your Ponder campervan rental. There is lots to do in this stunning park, like swimming or fishing in the lake, and taking a hike to Tucker Tower, which overlooks the water from high atop a scenic bluff. The tower is home to the Tucker Geological Museum, which houses the Lake Murray Meteorite said to be one of the five largest ever found on Earth.

Cedar Hill State Park is south of Dallas, with more lakeside fun for everyone. There are lovely walkways and boardwalks cutting through the wetlands of the park, perfect for hiking and biking. Additionally, there are several picnic areas, boat ramps, and a few campgrounds where you can park when you rent an RV and feel like remaining close to Dallas.

If you really feel ambitious, you can always opt to head to the far-flung corners of Texas to visit some of its truly amazing parks and forests. The Sam Houston National Forest down by Houston or Big Bend National Park on the shared border with Mexico are two of the state's most prized possessions. Long-distance hikes and glorious desert landscapes teeming with natural geodes and ancient fossils are part of the appeal of these fantastic wilderness areas.

RV Parks

When you rent an RV in Ponder, you’ll have dozens of nearby campgrounds to call your temporary home while on vacation. Northlake RV Village is a cozy campground close to the Texas Motor Speedway. This charming RV village has a fenced dog park, a pool, a forest to hike through, and fire pits for guests.

Ranch 380 RV Park is pretty simple in its offerings, with spacious campsites and rental cabins. Head here with the Ponder RV rental and you'll have access to restrooms and showers as well as a peaceful atmosphere.

West Bay RV Park & Marina has lots of camping spots to use, as well as a marina where you can dock your boat or personal watercraft. There are sandy beaches you can lounge on and a few swimming areas along the lakeshore too.

City Sightseeing

Ponder is incredibly lovely in nearly every way, but it will come as no surprise that this small town isn’t exactly known for its attractions or landmarks. Nearby Denton has a lot more to offer when it comes to city life. There you can find farmers markets, community art spaces, restaurants, bars, breweries, shopping centers, and museums for your entertainment. The Denton County Courthouse is one of the most beautiful buildings of its kind in the entire country, serving as a museum now paying homage to the past. You can see old photos, read important documents, and take a tour while observing historical artifacts when you visit this magnificent structure.

The Denton County African American Museum is an integral part of the town’s past, showing another face of the city from the perspective of poor African-American families who moved to Denton in search of a better life. This small house is much different than the Bayless-Selby House Museum, which is essentially a jewel of a Victorian home with fine antique furniture and an extraordinary attention to detail.

The Denton Firefighters Museum was opened in 2005, featuring a stellar collection of firefighting tools and vehicles dating back to the 1800s. You can learn about the history of this vital emergency service, with guided tours given by real firefighters.
