Patrick Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation located in Brevard County, Florida. Its original name was Naval Air Station Banana River and it was opened in 1940, just prior to the United States entering World War II. It was operated as a U.S. Naval airfield until 1947, then retired. It was re-opened in 1948 after operational control was reassigned to the U.S. Air Force. It is currently an active station with a number of different military departments operating from it on various projects.

RV rentals in Brevard County are a simple, rewarding way to take your vacation from vague plans to full implementation. There are other towns and cities nearby that are interesting and worth exploring. Cocoa's tourism industry got its first big boost from visitors coming to witness space launches at Cape Canaveral. Kissimmee's name is generally agreed to have originated from a Native American dialect, but more specific details are a matter of debate. Melbourne was founded in 1867 but its first settlers did not arrive until a year later, in 1868. Sebastian is a youngish city; incorporated in 1924, it is home to the first designated wildlife refuge in the United States. Vero Beach has a long list of dwellings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Vero Beach Diesel Power Plant, the Vero Railroad Station, and the Old Indian River County Courthouse. Your Patrick AFB RV trailer rental is your invitation to see all of these things, and more, firsthand.

The Great Outdoors

Upper Saint Johns River Marsh WMA is a natural preserve located in Brevard and Indian River Counties. It is a popular destination for paddling, hiking, and bicycling. Fishing is allowed and hunting is permissible in select seasons and with the appropriate license. The purpose of the WMA is to restore the marshland, the fish and wildlife habitats, and to improve water quality. Tent camping is allowed outside of hunting season and in select areas during hunting season. Keep your Patrick AFB motorhome rental nearby and you can store the fish you caught and cleaned right out of the water.

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park is a dry prairie preserve, open from early morning to dusk all year. It is a safe haven for many rare endangered species, making it a bird watcher's and photographer's paradise. Visitors can see deer racing through the tall waves of grassland and take a guided tour of the area in open buggies. Permitted activities include hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding on trails and service roads; bicycles are available for rent. The park is a Dark Sky Designation, meaning there is almost no light pollution from nearby cities; campers in the park have an unobstructed view of the stars and constellations.

Canaveral National Seashore is a barrier island providing shelter for wildlife species, outdoor activities, and opportunities to witness launches from nearby Cape Canaveral. The park is an ideal place for photographers and those just wishing to observe wildlife and nature. Visitors can enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and swimming; swimmers should be aware that riptides can be strong and exercise caution. Camping is allowed and there is a visitors center with exhibits and knowledgeable staff.

RV Parks

There are several RV parks and campgrounds near Patrick AFB; some of them may be limited to or give preference to military personnel and their families. Your Patrick AFB RV rental is all you will need to make any of these places your home-away-from-home.

Palm Shores RV Park is a child-friendly RV campground with big rig access and full hookups. The park has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and a tank dump.

Space Coast RV Resort is a fully developed RV campground with a clubhouse, laundry facilities, and a convenience store. Pets are welcome and activities include a swimming pool, horseshoes and shuffleboard, and a library. It is close to the beach and has social activities for its guests.

Exploring The City

There is much to see and take in while you are here and visitors may want to start with space-related activities. NASA Kennedy Space Center has a Visitor Complex where the public can touch the original space shuttle Atlantis and pieces of moon rock. If you're lucky, some of the veteran NASA astronauts may be on hand to welcome you. There are coastal boat tours and fishing charters, one of which boasts about fishing for sharks. More adventurous types can go parasailing or take a helicopter tour of the area. It wouldn't be an RV vacation, though, if you didn't fit in some time to take your Patrick Air Force Base camper rental for a spin on the local highways.

All this activity must have you starving by now (or empathy hunger pangs, if you're just reading along), and the area around Patrick AFB does dinner proud. There's not much in the way of cuisines you won't find here; selections range from wood-fired pizzerias to Southern food. One Southern-style restaurant is open for breakfast on certain days and dinner on the weekends; guests venturing into this establishment should try the catfish with okra and beets; breakfast customers can satisfy themselves with the eggs and grits. A Thai venue serves Japanese food as well as Thai; especially popular is the egg drop soup.

Portions at most of these restaurants are large, so plan on taking some of your dinner home with you for a late night snack. You also have the option of creating your own gourmet feast in your Patrick AFB luxury RV rental; supplies can be found at local grocers and no one knows your preferences as well as you. A quiet dinner enjoyed in your favorite lawn chair under a star-filled Florida sky is an experience, especially if you can throw in a sunset too. This is what vacations should be.
