Ossipee lies in the eastern portion of New Hampshire, in an area known as the Lakes District. It’s just a short drive from the state’s capital of Concord and is also not far from Laconia, where the world-famous Motorcycle Week happens every June. Its locations near the northeastern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee and on the south side of Lake Ossipee makes it a popular summer camping site when the temperatures and humidity in New England are soaring.

While Ossipee is most well known as a haven for summer recreation, it’s also thought to be the birthplace of the snowmobile, when in 1917, one of its residents converted a Ford Model T to run on skis. Today the surrounding lakes are popular with New England ice anglers who brave the cold to dip their line below its icy surface.

The Great Outdoors

When you book a camper rental in Ossipee, you can visit the numerous lakes in the center of the state. With so much water, it rarely feels crowded, and if it does, you can head a bit farther down the shore to find some solitude. Kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddleboards are also available for rent throughout the Lakes District, and a few outfitters will even lease a powerboat for the day.

RV travelers who love to climb big peaks can head to the nearby White Mountains, a veritable playground of topnotch hiking. Mount Washington, the tallest summit in New England, is the centerpiece of “the Whites,” but there are several others that have less crowded trails and aren’t plagued by Washington’s severe winds. The Franconia Ridge Loop hike over Mount Lafayette, Lincoln, Liberty, and Flume has some of the best views in the state and is at the top of many peak baggers' bucket lists.

If you decide to get a motorhome rental in Ossipee during the winter months, you won’t need to worry about finding great outdoor activities either. While the mountains sit at a lower elevation compared to the more famous peaks out west, New Hampshire is quite possibly the king of skiing in New England. Some of the best skiing resorts in the state are just up the road in the White Mountains like Blacktail, Cranmore Mountain, and Cannon Mountain.

RV Parks

Thanks to its summer tourism appeal, there are tons of great RV parks to enjoy when you’re in Ossipee. Westward Shores Cottages and RV Resort sits right on the western shore of Lake Ossipee and has full hookups for your Ossipee RV rental, a dog park, a convenience store, and laundry facilities. If you’d like to get out on the water, the park has a marina for launching motorized and non-motorized boats.

If you’d rather stay on Lake Wentworth when you get an RV rental in Ossipee, there’s Robies RV Park on the lake’s northeastern shore. Sites there offer full hookups and a dock for your boat. Many visitors choose to stay here if they’re driving down to more southerly points in the state as it's conveniently located on Highway 28 leading to Concord.

If water sports aren’t on your agenda, you might prefer a stay at Beaver Hollow Campground on the edge of the Pine River State Forest. There are excellent trails starting just outside the park, and the sites have full hookups, access to a swimming pool with waterslides, showers, laundry facilities, along with basketball and volleyball courts. This is also one of the most family-friendly places to stay when you get a motorhome rental in Ossipee, New Hampshire.

Exploring the City

While most people get a travel trailer rental in Ossipee for the purpose of relaxing amidst the beautiful surroundings, there are a number of interesting attractions in some of the small towns around Ossipee. The town of Tamworth has the Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm. Animal lovers will enjoy spending the afternoon amidst the livestock at this delightful tribute to New Hampshire’s rural culture. There are also quite a few exhibits devoted to sustainable living including beeswax candle-making.

There’s also the Wright Museum of World War II in nearby Wolfeboro. The museum hosts service member’s artwork, photography projects focused on past veterans, and several other unique exhibits that go beyond the facts of the war to give a rich picture of the cultural impact that it played. There’s a lot more to it than battle names and dates, instead showing the human side and the extreme costs of the war.

You’d probably never expect to find great vineyards in the often-icy cold foothills of central New Hampshire, but thanks to advances in grape cultivation and a few hardy species, the state has become a prolific wine producer. If you book an RV in Ossipee during the summer months, take a tour of one of the vineyards to learn about the unique microclimates that can be found in the Lakes District and the special grapes that are being grown then. After the vineyard’s science lesson, head inside and enjoy the fruits of their labor at a tasting to see if one of their bottles strikes your fancy.
