The Great Outdoors

Tomoka State Park is on the north side of the city. Situated along the Tomoka River, the park encompasses 2,000 acres. It has a variety of habitats and endangered species, including the  West Indian manatee. Native Americans once called these lands home, living off the water. Today, the park waters are popular for canoeing, boating, and fishing. In the spring and fall, more than 160 species of birds use the area during migrations. The park also offers full-facility campsites with a small park store on-site selling camping supplies and snacks. Take the Ormond Beach motorhome rental just across the river to Addison Blockhouse Historic State Park. Check out the 19th-century plantation ruins. The home was owned by John Addison from 1816-1836. Later, the home was fortified by the military for use in the Seminole Wars.

Bulow Creek State Park is a little farther north. The park protects close to 5,600 acres of land, including marshes and coastal forest. It’s home to the largest live oak in the south, the Fairchild Oak, which is more than 400 years old. There are several trails in the park, including the Bulow Woods Trail. It’s almost seven miles long and leads to Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park. Once a thriving sugar plantation, this park is now a state protected area of 150 acres. Visitors can see the ruins which feature a sugar mill, spring house, and slave cabins. There’s an interpretive center where guests can learn about the local history and also a quiet picnic area. Canoe rentals are available at the park and can be launched from the boat ramp into Bulow Creek.
