Discover Opa-locka

The Great Outdoors

Opa-Locka’s convenient location just outside of the big city makes it the perfect starting point for exploring the natural beauty of Southeastern Florida when you rent an RV. The Miami Metro Area’s biggest outdoor attraction is Everglades National Park. Although this park is a bit of a drive from Opa-Locka, it’s stunning scenery has earned it titles as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Wetland of International Importance, making it well worth the trek. Some of the most scenic areas of the park are best accessed by boat, so the park offers plenty of opportunities for boaters, canoers, and kayakers to glide through the wetlands. If you prefer to travel by foot, check out the park’s handful of hiking trails, or put your boots on and go on an off-trail slough slogging tour through the wetlands. Fishing is also allowed in regulated areas, and visitors can view a diverse array of wildlife in all areas of the park.

If you’d like to stay closer to the city with the Opa-Locka RV rental, check out Haulover Park, the Anne Kolb Nature Center, or RVers looking for a day at the beach should check out Haulover Park, which offers 1.4 miles of public-use shoreline. In addition to swimming and surfing, visitors to Haulover Park can also enjoy kite flying, fishing, and a dog-friendly beach area. If you want to view a stunning coastal mangrove forest, head to the Anne Kolb Nature Center in Hollywood. This nature center features boat tours of the mangrove forest as well as three miles of nature trails that offer prime wildlife viewing opportunities. Oleta River State Park also offers scenic views and wildlife watching opportunities with a few more recreational opportunities. Visitors to the park can swim in a scenic saltwater lagoon, canoe or kayak the Oleta River, or even embark on the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail, which is over 1,500 miles long.

RV Parks

As a gateway to both Miami and the Everglades, you’ll find plenty of RV parks around Opa-Locka. For a variety of basic amenities in nearby Hollandale Beach, check out the Embassy RV Park, which offers easy access to I-95 as well as over full hookup sites, a heated pool, and laundry facilities. This park offers both short-term and long-term rates. There are also two KOA campgrounds nearby in both Hollywood and Davie. The Hollywood KOA offers full hookup sites as well as basic amenities like on-site laundry, Wi-Fi, and modern restrooms and showers. The Davie/Fort Lauderdale KOA has amenities like a heated pool, a large dog park, and an on-site walking and biking trail.

If you’d like to spend a night in the Everglades with the Opa-Locka camper rental, you have a couple campground options. Long Pine Key offers sites in the middle of a pine forest as well as modern restrooms and showers, a dump station, and fresh water. The campground is also conveniently located near a fishing pond and plenty of hiking trails. Flamingo Campground offers more sites and amenities. The campground has drive-up sites, some of which have electrical hookups. Amenities include solar-powered showers, two dump stations, and plenty of on-site wildlife viewing. Although these campgrounds are far away from the city, they’re well worth the drive in the Opa-Locka motorhome rental.

Exploring the City

Opa-Locka is a relatively small city with an area of just 4.2 square miles, so activities within the city limits are limited. However, architecture buffs will enjoy touring the city’s Moorish Revival buildings - one of the largest collections in the Western Hemisphere. Additionally, Opa-Locka’s convenient location near State Route 9 and I-95 makes for an easy trip to many of the Miami area’s best attractions. For an upscale night on the town, head to Miami’s Design District for upscale shops and eateries, high-end galleries, and the famous Fly’s Eye Dome. The Design District is just north of Wynwood, another arts district known for its vibrant street art, culinary scene, and nightlife. If you have kids in tow, check out the Miami Children’s Museum, which features hands-on exhibits and even a cruise ship replica. However, if you do head into the city, leave the Opa-Locka rental RV safely parked - Miami traffic is no joke.
