One of the most important cities in New York’s Southern Tier region, Olean is the lively business and entertainment hub of Cattaraugus County. It was originally home to the Wenro Native American people before being settled by Europeans around 1765 and officially established as Olean in the early 19th century.

Olean flourished soon after with the discovery of oil and became a railroad and pipeline hub, with the city at one time the world’s largest oil depot. It became notorious as a major stop on bootlegging routes during the 1920's Prohibition era and was nicknamed “Little Chicago” as a result.

Today, Olean is a much more laid-back destination and an ideal place to rent an RV while exploring southwest New York State. It’s well served by RV campgrounds and offers easy access to the recreational pursuits of the nearby Appalachian Mountains.

Discover Olean

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Olean and make the short drive south to Rock City Park, which lies just five miles away. It’s renowned for its spectacular geological formations that comprise what is the world’s largest exposure of quartz conglomerate. Stop in at the on-site museum to learn about the natural geology, then follow one of the hiking trails to soak up the breathtaking views of the Enchanted Mountains or settle in at one of the peaceful picnic sites.

A short drive west of Olean is the Allegany State Park, which is divided into two sections - the Red House area in the northeast and the Quaker area in the southwest. The park is often referred to as "the wilderness playground of Western New York” thanks to its diversity of recreational pursuits and natural wonders. Stop in at the Old Quaker Store Museum to discover the history of the park, then set out to explore on the hiking and biking trails that lead to waterfalls, caves, and historic fire towers.

Directly south of the Allegany State Park lies the Allegheny National Forest, which sprawls across more than 500,000 acres in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It’s another wonderland for nature lovers, with everything from hiking and biking to fishing and boating on the Allegheny Reservoir. Stretch your legs on the seven-mile-long Beaver Meadows Hiking Trail or go mountain biking to the Twin Lakes, with the park transforming for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during the winter months.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Olean and head to the Riverhurst Park Campground, a family-owned RV destination on the banks of the Allegany River. Vaccinated pets are welcome to stay with you, and their RV sites offer direct access to a number of short walking trails that lead beneath 100-foot white pine trees.

Olean is also home to the Lake Lane Campground, which offers RV sites with 30 or 50-amp services, water, and fire rings. There’s a children’s playground and also an outdoor heated pool with a slide, as well as fishing available in their private ponds.

A 15-minute drive north of Olean takes you to Cuba and the Maple Lane RV Park, which offers a range of 30 and 50-amp service sites on their grassy lawns. There are laundry facilities and Wi-Fi available, all within a short drive of Cuba Lake.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Olean and pay a visit to the Olean Bartlett House, a Queen Anne-style residence that was constructed in 1881. It features nine rooms that are elegantly decorated in a turn-of-the-20th-century Victorian aesthetic, with intricate detailing and ornate fireplaces made from imported woods. Wander up the Tiffany-style staircase and admire the period furnishings, then browse the historical exhibits about Olean that are on display in the converted Carriage House.

Another local landmark is the Cutco/Ka-Bar Visitors Center, which showcases the growth of the company and the rich heritage of Ka-Bar knives. Get a behind-the-scenes look at how the knives are made, then browse the fascinating collection of antique kitchen cutlery, military, and pocket knives on display. Historical photographs and documents also feature in the exhibits.

Need some retail therapy? Spend an afternoon at the Olean Center Mall. There are more than 20 retail stores ranging from fashion and beauty to homewares and electrical, as well as an Italian-style pizza restaurant and pretzel store.

Olean is home to numerous supermarkets where you can pick up groceries, as well as a good selection of restaurants and fast food eateries if you want to dine out. There are also gas stations if you need to fill up your travel trailer rental in Olean.
