Ogdensburg is located on the border between the United States and Canada, directly on the St. Lawrence River. When you book an RV in Ogdensburg will find that they have easy access to Ottawa, Canada , and cities like Canton and Gouverneur await them on the United States side.
There is plenty of rich history in Ogdensburg, considering that this region can trace its modern timeline back to 1749 when the French first settled in to build a mission, the Fort de La Présentation. This mission fort was named by French Sulpician priest Abbé Picquet and was intended to help bolster their existing alliance with the influential Iroquois nation. The fort was eventually taken over by the British, and subsequently became part of the United States. If you want to learn more check out the Fort de La Présentation Site in Ogdensburg.
Enjoying the outdoors will be easy to do in a Ogdensburg RV rental, especially if you’re a fan of water-related sports. The Oswegatchie River runs directly through Ogdensburg and eventually connects to Black Lake. This river is great for kayaking and small boats, and the fact that you can launch in Ogdensburg and make your way to Black Lake for a day of fishing is ultra convenient.
In addition to the Oswegatchie River, Ogdensburg also borders the St. Lawrence River which can handle much larger boats. Just north up the river from Ogdensburg is Galop Island, an inter-river island that offers a unique place to have a picnic while looking at both the United States and Canada. RV rentals in Ogdensburg give easy access to these two rivers.
Another unique thing to check out when you rent a motorhome in Ogdensburg are the two old world style cemeteries that lie on the southeast end of town. The Notre Dame Cemetery and the Riverside Cemetery are both small but are interesting places to walk around while taking in the history of the area. There are many graves that are centuries old, and the decorative headstones alone are worth pulling over for.
After you arrive in town and pick up your motorhome rental in Ogdensburg, you’ll find that there aren’t too many RV parks super close on the United States side of the St. Lawrence. There is, however, a Walmart on the northeast side of town. Make sure to check with the manager to ensure you can park overnight, as it is better to be safe than sorry in this situation.
As for the Canadian side of the St. Lawrence, the options are a bit more plentiful. The nearest RV park is located next to Johnstown and has full-service hookups with water and up to 30 amp power sources. This park also has a large assortment of perks, like showers, a pool, a small grocery store, and even a recreation hall for guest use.
A little further north of Johnstown, but still close enough to be easily accessible with your RV rental is a KOA. This KOA comes with all the amenities you’d expect from this company, including the ability to easily reserve online way before your actual trip. There are pull-through sites, back in sites, and plenty of hookups for guests to use to ensure a comfortable stay.
The St. Lawrence River is such a crucial aspect of Ogdensburg, and it is no surprise that they built a lighthouse to help guide ships to safety on dark and foggy nights. Ogdensburg Harbor Light, a privately owned lighthouse, was built in the 1800s and has since been added to the National Register of Historic Places. When you pick up your camper rental in Ogdensburg swing by this lighthouse as it is considered one of New York’s Historic Light Stations. Seeing the lighthouse during either night or day will be a memorable experience, and the lighthouse makes for a great family photo backdrop as well.
Because this town has such a rich military history, it makes it easy for military enthusiasts to pick up their travel trailer rental in Ogdensburg and explore the surrounding area. If you’re a military enthusiast, you’ll definitely want to check out the New York State Armory, or as the locals call it, “The Arsenal.” This historic site was originally built out of ransom ashlar block in the mid-1800s and ceased being used by the State militia around 1870. The building was continually used by the city for weapon storage until the 1960s, and it has since been opened to the public as a center for learning.
The armory is located in downtown Ogdensburg, which is also where visitors can find plenty of food and fuel options. Though for the most convenient options you’ll want to head to the northeast side of town, along Highway 37.
