Nowata was part of the Indian Territory when it was first established, and the name was Metz, after its first postmaster. Officially the city was incorporated a decade later, in 1899. When oil and gas were discovered in 1904, the city’s economy was booming. Some of the fields still produce oil and gas. Exploring the City

Nowata is a small but interesting city to visit, with some unique attractions, like the Bowling Ball Yard Art museum. It is a privately owned garden that was initially a rose garden. The collection started with one sculpture, and nowadays, there are over 3,000 bowling balls turned into sculptures in this unique garden. Visit the garden and talk to the artist about this interesting art display in the city.

Nowata County Historical Society Museum and Glass Mansion are the best locations to learn about the county’s history and see the antiques preserved in the mansion, together with other objects, photographs, and stories. The mansion is especially beautifully decorated around Christmastime, but you can also visit it year-round, or even celebrate weddings, birthdays, and other events here.

The Asylum is a famous haunted house in Nowata, located inside an asylum where experiments were said to be performed on patients. The museum offers scary tours where you will be performing surgeries, running away from monsters, and getting messy.
