North Vernon is a city in Jennings County, Indiana, which was platted in 1854 under the name Tripton. It was nicknamed “The Crossroads of Indiana” due to the sheer number of trains passing through the town, headed in all different directions. The city has an urban folktale suggesting that famed bank robber John Dillinger decided not to rob a bank in North Vernon because the number of trains would make getting away slow and difficult. In 1873, a tax was levied to raise money for civic projects, covering local bonds and each dog within city limits; the dog tax was unpopular but efforts to rescind it failed. The tax was followed by a 300% increase in the cost of liquor licenses.
Book an RV in Jennings County, and you will be ready to embark on an adventure in one of the most historically unique cities in the country. There are other towns you should visit while you're here. Shelbyville was host to the first railroad in the state of Indiana (it was built in 1830). Greensburg is nicknamed “Tree City” after a tree that is located on top of the Decatur County Courthouse Tower. Madison was a key Indiana city until railroads began replacing river traffic for the shipping of goods. Salem has a race car track, Salem Speedway, that was built in 1947 and has hosted a number of famous professional drivers such as Mario Andretti. Bedford was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Your North Vernon travel trailer rental can make it easy to see the sights and tour the attractions in and around this interesting city.
Selmier State Forest was created from a private land donation to the state. The previous owner, Frank Selmier, was an avid outdoorsman who planted numerous tree species on the property, such as pine and black walnut. The property has three buildings, a Boy Scout cabin, a church (converted from a school), and a former homestead cabin. Visitors can enjoy fishing and hunting with the appropriate licenses (hunting in-season only). Some of the fish species on hand are largemouth and smallmouth bass and bluegill; hunters can try for white-tailed deer, raccoons, squirrels, and turkey. Hikers can enjoy a number of trails through the tree stands but should wear bright colors (or bright orange vests) during hunting season.
Crosley Fish and Wildlife Area was a private hunting and fishing territory until it was purchased in 1958 by the Department of Fish and Wildlife. It consists of rolling hills that are mostly wooded, numerous ponds, and the Muscatatuck River that flows through the area. Management of the area is funded by fishing, hunting, and trapping licenses; the ponds contain largemouth bass, while hunters have the option of deer, turkey, waterfowl, and several other wildlife species. There is a rifle and archery shooting range in the park. Hiking is allowed, but trails are not marked; hikers can pick mushrooms, nuts, and berries, but other vegetation should not be disturbed. Boating and canoeing are also allowed. Park your North Vernon RV trailer rental nearby, and you can return to the comforts of home when your outdoor adventures are completed.
Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge was established in 2000 from territory owned by the U.S. Army and is managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service. It is home to several endangered species such as the Indiana bat and Henslow's sparrows and is used by other migratory bird species. It is a wintering site for bald and golden eagles. Visitors can fish on Old Timbers Lake on specific days between mid-April and November; hunting is allowed at specific times depending on the game being targeted. Visitors can enjoy photography, wildlife viewing, and hiking, but are requested to complete the refuge safety briefing as the area was formerly an army ordinance testing ground.
