Sprawling around a branch in the Elkhorn River, Norfolk is a vibrant city in the east of Nebraska. It was founded by scouts from a German Lutheran settlement in 1865 and was originally named North Fork before being established as the county seat in 1867. The arrival of the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad in 1879 led to significant growth in the city, which reached a population of 3,883 by 1900.

Today, Norfolk is a popular place to rent an RV while exploring the bird-filled reserves along the Elkhorn River. It’s well served by RV campgrounds and is within easy access of Sioux City, which lies just across the border in Iowa while being just two hours’ drive from Omaha.

It’s a popular birdwatching destination, with steep riverine bluffs and mature hardwood forests that attract a myriad of species. A 2.7-mile-long trail winds through the reserve and is accessible year-round, with the opportunity to see a variety of songbirds, such as warblers, as well as quails and doves.

Its oxbow lakes, marshes, and streams attract an abundance of birdlife, including geese, ducks, cormorants, and songbirds. Also nearby is the Maskenthine Lake Recreation Area where you can go swimming, boating, or fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, black bullhead, and yellow perch.

To the north of Norfolk is the Willow Creek Recreation Area, which is named after a meandering stream that feeds the Elkhorn River. This 1,633-acre natural area is renowned for its fishing, with crappie, bluegill, bass, catfish, walleye, northern pike, tiger musky, and bullheads all for the taking. If you want to stretch your legs, there’s also an eight-mile-long hiking trail, as well as horseback riding trails and a designated swimming beach.
