Newport News is an independent city, located on a peninsula near Richmond, VA. As an independent city, it does not belong to any county. Officially, it is 120 square miles in size, although 51 square miles of that is underwater, making it unofficially 69 square miles. Its main industry is, and has been for some time, shipbuilding; today it also relies heavily on military contracts to support its economy. The North End of Newport News is an assortment of homes and building constructed between 1900 and 1935; these homes are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, due to their diverse and interesting architectural styles.

Nearby cities that might be of interest to those visiting Newport News are Richmond, Petersburg, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Tappahannock. Rent a motorhome in Newport News and head out to check out these other destinations, if you have time.

Discover Newport News

The Great Outdoors

When you book an RV in Newport News, you’ll find that there aren’t many national parklands in the area; the nearest large forested area is George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, but that is roughly a three-hour drive from Newport News, in each direction. Closer to home, adventure buffs can check out Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Don't be fooled by the name, though, as the refuge offers some great hiking and biking trails, in addition to hunting in specific zones. It is also a good destination for bird watchers and photography enthusiasts. Keep your Newport News luxury RV rental nearby to integrate the great outdoors with the great indoors.

East of Newport News, near Poquoson, is the Plum Tree Island National Wildlife Refuge; the Grandview Nature Preserve is near Plum Tree but on a different section of the peninsula and can only be accessed by driving south to Hampton, then northeast (watch for signs). Visitors to Grandview Nature Preserve can hike the trails through woodlands and marshes, keeping an eye out (and a camera ready) for birds and other wildlife. The trails eventually come to an end at a long scenic beach, which is Grandview Point. If you think you might go for a swim at Grandview Point, parking your Newport News RV rental at the preserve entrance/parking lot would simplify the changing of clothes afterward.

RV Parks

Nearby RV resorts of interest are The Colonies RV & Travel Park, Williamsburg / Busch Gardens Area KOA and Anvil Campground. The Colonies is a smaller RV park; some sites have full hookups while the remaining sites have only water and electric (no sewer). It has a convenience store carrying most basic necessary supplies, and also features barbecue grills, a pavilion, and recreation such as pickleball, horseshoes, volleyball, tennis courts and bicycle rentals.

Anvil Campground has full hookups, 30/50 amp service, wireless internet, a pool, bathhouse, beach park, convenience store, games room and laundry. Busch Gardens Area KOA, in Williamsburg, is open from March to mid-December. Its sites will fit RVs up to 90 feet in length; it has 50-amp service, propane, wireless internet, a pool, pavilion and snack bar, as well as bicycles for rent.

Exploring The City

Within Newport News, there is actually quite a bit to see and do. Five notable museums worth checking out are the Mariners Museum & Park, the Virginia Living Museum, the Virginia War Museum, U.S. Army Transportation Museum and The Newsome House.

The Virginia Living Museum is exactly what it sounds like and much more. There are many displays of both animals, birds and reptiles, and some areas where young children can touch certain displays. There is a horticultural center, displaying some of Virginia's diverse plants and fauna. The Museum also houses an observatory and a state-of-the-art planetarium. Once your brain has collected all the information, boardwalk trails allow guests to observe the animals they've learned about in their natural habitat. In the museum's conservation garden and green living house, guests can learn how to live more environmentally conscious.

Newport News Park and Sandy Bottom Nature Park (close by in Hampton), are two good retreats to get in some hiking and fresh air without leaving the city. Victory Arch is a good place to take the camera for a spin and the Peninsula Fine Arts Center has a rotating selection of displays, and hands-on materials for young kids to play with. It is a small museum but expect to spend an hour to two if you want to really experience the center. There is a farmers market, and specialty gift shops featuring work by local artisans, and a recreation arena where you can strap on some ice skates to escape the heat.

The best part of any vacation is trying something new and unusual; while Indian food isn't that unusual, Newport News is as good a place as any to try something spicy and hot. There are a couple eateries in the area featuring authentic Indian cuisine and are also vegetarian/ vegan-friendly, as are many of the other restaurants here. Fans of fusion cuisine and gastropub-style options will have some options around town, too.

Your motorhome rental in Newport News will definitely make dining decisions much easier; bring home leftovers from your big restaurant meal to enjoy later, courtesy of your Newport News rental camper refrigerator, or stock up on groceries for a nice home cooked meal, eaten under the stars. Life doesn't get much better than this.
