The first known European visitor was Pierre Yax, a German explorer, who arrived in New Baltimore in 1796. French trappers and farmers slowly trickled into southeastern Michigan in the subsequent years. In 1845, Alfred Ashley, who was an entrepreneur, purchased some farmland and divided the land into lots. He sold these lots to other settlers and called this fledgling new town Ashleyville. In 1867, the residents voted to become a proper town and changed the name to New Baltimore.

During the golden age of Motor City, Detroit’s wealthy residents would often flee the summer heat for New Baltimore’s cool lakeside air. However, as the major employers moved away from Detroit, the town started to fall back into a shadow of its old self. Though this impacted New Baltimore’s tourism industry, it has grown in the decades since. Today, New Baltimore is a growing town with a lot of old charm. In 2006, New Baltimore was ranked the 18th safest town in Michigan out of 193 towns.

The closest large town is Charter Township of Clinton about 15 miles southwest. Detroit is a little over 35 miles southwest. Wherever your destination is, a New Baltimore RV rental will get you there safe and sound.

The Great Outdoors

Wake up to the sounds of nature and birdsong right outside your window when you rent an RV in New Baltimore. A travel trailer rental opens up a world of adventure and fun, especially on Lake St. Clair. The Canada-United States border divides the lake nearly in half, an on the USA side, there are several marinas with public docks. Some of these marinas have boats, kayaks, pontoons, and canoes for rent, also. Lake St. Clair is purported to be one of the world’s best muskie and walleye fishing spots. After catching your fish, head over to one of Michigan’s Catch-and-Cook restaurants where they’ll grill, sauteed, fry, or bake your fish for you. Fishing isn’t the only recreational activity, though. Swim, windsurf, tube, and dive. During the Prohibition Era in the 1920s, rum runners regularly used Lake St. Clair to transport illegal booze into Detroit, and a few inevitably wrecked. There are reports of old bottles of rums and moonshine being found around the wrecks. Muscamoot Bay is a notorious party spot; boaters and rafters often will congregate there. A festival is held right on the water annually, usually in early August.

For the land lovers, Bald Mountain near Lake Orion, MI, is a popular hiking spot. As the name suggests, it’s one of the steepest, highest hills in southeastern Michigan. There are over 15 miles of maintained trails for hiking, some of which are shared with mountain bikers. Metal detecting, disc golf, geocaching, and drone/RC flying are popular summertime activities. The fun doesn’t stop in the wintertime. Cross-country ski, ride a snowmobile, or ice-fish. Though neither options include overnight camping, there are several private campgrounds in the area that can accommodate a camper rental.

RV Parks

When you book an RV in New Baltimore, be sure to figure out where you’ll park while you go on your adventures. Stony Creek Metropark in Washington Township, is one of the few public parks allowing RVs and campers in the area. However, they are open only on weekends between Memorial weekend and the middle of September.

Another select campground overlooking Lake St. Clair is the Northpointe Shores RV Resort in Ira Township. Offering full 20, 30, and 50 amps hookups, free WiFi, and a private marina with a boat launch and dock.

Port Huron KOA in Kimball Township, MI, may be a good alternative. A full-service camping resort, the facility offers everything from minigolf to retro arcade gaming room. This KOA is very close to the southernmost point of Lake Huron.

Exploring the City

Whether you prefer the slower pace of a small town or the hustle and bustle of a big city, a luxury RV rental from New Baltimore makes it easy to find your ideal adventure. There are several historic homes dating back to the 18th century still standing today. In the heart of New Baltimore is small-but-elegant Grand Pacific House Museum, which was originally a premier hotel for elite Detroit residents. Today, the museum is a living history display, with some of the original furnishings, tools, and artifacts on regularly-rotating display.

CJ Barrymore’s is one of the oldest amusement parks in Michigan. The rides are not antique, by any means. The amusement park has several modern rides that are sure to thrill everyone, including the saddle sling, which is a slingshot ride, drop tower, and a topsy-turvy roller coaster. Thrill-seekers can also go rock climbing, test their mettle in a bumper car, or laser tag. There are tamer options, too. Hit the driving range, bowling alley, or the Ferris wheel. The roomy parking lot can accommodate small RV rentals, too.

Henry Ford, the founder of a major auto company, is credited for launching Detroit’s Golden Age, an era in which nearly every resident in Detroit was employed by one of the major auto manufacturers. Opt for one of the three main museum tours (or all three) in Dearborn to spend some time at; Henry Ford’s Museum of American Innovation. This museum highlights the major inventions and milestones in America’s history and has on display some remarkable artifacts like the famous Rosa Park bus, tractors that transformed the agriculture industry, and one of the first test airplane models. At Greenfield Village, visitors can ride in a genuine Model T car, one of the first cars ever made, learn how artisan glass is made, and visit working farms. Or get a glimpse into the future of automobiles at the Ford Rouge Factory, walk the assembly factory floor, and learn what went into designing the classic Ford F-150 truck. The museum’s parking lots charge a minor fee.

Sanders Chocolate and Ice Cream Shoppe is a local small-business chain. Sanders got its start in Macomb, and they now have a few retail locations around Detroit. At the flagship location, visitors not only can purchase delicious ice cream, chocolate, and other confectioneries, they can also tour the chocolate factory and learn how the sinfully tasty desserts are made. As an added bonus, the guides hand out samples during the tour.

Catch a sunset, tour a museum, or simply sit by the fire and enjoy the area. Get out and explore Michigan as you make new memories in a New Baltimore motorhome rental.
