The small town of Nederland, Colorado started as a trading post in the late 19th century for European settlers and Ute indigenous peoples to exchange goods. After the discovery of minerals, several mining operations were established in town, one of which was from the Netherlands, hence the name Nederland, Colorado.

Now, the town of Nederland only has remnants of its mining industry past and has been overtaken by ecotourism. Residents from all over Colorado and beyond visit this quaint village in the summertime to interact with unreal scenery, and to take a relaxing and much-needed break in a peaceful setting amid the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Nederland is almost halfway between the towns of Boulder and Winter Park, in the middle of one of the largest national forests in Colorado.

Discover Nederland

Explore the Outdoors

Colorado is famous for its magnificent scenery, especially in the portion of the state covered by the Rocky Mountains. Nederland sits on the edge of this impressive mountain range in its rolling foothills, immersed within its extraordinary scenery. Nederland sits on the shores of Barker Reservoir, a glorious body of water that benefits the town both practically and aesthetically. Barker Reservoir Recreation Area is also located on this wonderful lake and is a fantastic place to go when you rent an RV in Nederland. You can enjoy great views of the water, swimming, boating, and fishing for trout when you bring your Nederland camper rental to the shores of Barker Reservoir.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park is not far from Nederland and serves as another great opportunity for adventure when you rent an RV here. The park has miles and miles of nature trails for horseback riding, mountain biking, and, of course, trekking by foot. You can see incredible wildlife at Golden Gate Canyon State Park too, like the aspen trees, imposing moose, and curious black bears. State Forest State Park is located northwest of Nederland and is another fantastic place to see moose, black bears, bighorn sheep, and elk roaming over the hills and mountains. This park is nearly two miles up in the mountains, so the air is fresh, the temperature is cool, and the camping is serene. There are plenty of camping spaces to accommodate you and your Nederland travel trailer rental when you visit.

Rocky Mountain National Park is an obvious destination, as it one of the most famous parks in the country. The landscape feels like something out of an old painting, especially when viewed at sunset on a vista towering over the steep gorges and canyons below. The subalpine meadows are decorated with wildflowers of every color imaginable, and the mountaintop lakes are great places to take a dip if you are brave and not afraid of the cold. If you're here with the Nederland RV rental during the colder months, you can enjoy a wide range of wintertime activities too, like backcountry skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and more.

RV Parks to Visit

You’ll have no trouble finding a place to camp anywhere in the Rocky Mountains, and when you book an RV in Nederland, there is no exception. The Barker Reservoir Recreation Area could be a convenient choice as it is only minutes from town along the lake. Peak to Peak RV Park is also found next to Nederland and has limited spots for campers to rent, so it is wise to book ahead of time to ensure accommodation.

Kelly Dahl Campground is a national forest campground administered by the federal government. Here you can stay in the middle of nature with your Nederland RV rental by owner. Rainbow Lakes Campground is only open in the summer months and is situated on the gorgeous subalpine lake in the mountains. There are countless other campgrounds in the surrounding national forest, as well as a few in Boulder to the east.

City Sightseeing

Nederland might not enjoy the number of attractions and landmarks that Denver or Boulder does, but it isn’t entirely devoid of excitement. There are a couple of breweries in town, and some great places to shop for winter clothing and souvenirs. The Carousel of Happiness is an iconic feature of Nederland that is the subject of countless photographs for people hoping to catch a glimpse of the hand-carved masterpiece. The carousel was rescued and painstakingly restored by a resident who brought the entertainment ride to life again. Wild Bear Nature Center is open seven days a week and is open to the public. This sanctuary is an amazing place to learn about nature in Colorado, and there are lots of workshops and camps for children of all ages to learn and appreciate the environment.

The ski resort in Eldora could be a nice spot for snowboarding and skiing, and a well-kept secret devoid of the crowds that plague other resorts in the mountains. The mountain is one of the closest to the Denver metro area. Nederland Mining Museum pays homage to the town’s history of mining, which played a significant role in its development and founding. There are lots of old mining implements, machines, and artifacts for guests to view and learn about while visiting the museum during their Nederland motorhome rental vacation.
