While its name suggests it might be a national park (or closely associated with one), National Park, New Jersey is actually a borough on the southern bank of the Delaware River. It’s where the Battle of Red Bank took place during the American Revolutionary War, and its name probably originated as “National Park on the Delaware” in reference to the battlefield park.

Today, National Park is a relaxed destination to rent an RV while exploring the sights of Gloucester County. It’s within easy access of wildlife-filled reserves and family-friendly attractions while being on the southern doorstep of Philadelphia.

Discover National Park

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in National Park and drive south to the Glassboro Wildlife Management Area, which comprises just over 2,000 acres of low deciduous swamp and oak/pine forests. It’s a popular birdwatching destination, with hooded, Kentucky and prothonotary warblers all spotted here, as well as a range of wildlife species. Follow one of the walking trails that lead through the dense understory of mountain laurel and wild azaleas, or access the ponds and cleared fields along the sandy roads that crisscross the reserve.

Alternatively, head across the Delaware River to the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, which protects the largest remaining freshwater tidal marsh in Pennsylvania. The 1,000-acre reserve provides a vital habitat for deer, raccoons, coyotes, beavers, and river otters, as well as more than 300 species of birds. Keep your eyes peeled for warblers, egrets, and sandpipers while exploring the popular Impoundment Trail or enjoy an afternoon canoeing along the scenic waters of Darby Creek.

National Park is also within easy access of the Ridley Creek State Park, a 2,600-acre nature reserve in the township of Edgmont. It’s crisscrossed by a number of cycling and walking trails while being home to an impressive garden designed by the Olmsted Brothers. Discover what life was like on a pre-Revolutionary farm at the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation, then head to the nearby John J. Tyler Arboretum to wander amidst its diverse array of plant and tree species.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in National Park and make the short drive south to the Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA, which features a range of well-equipped pull-through and back-in RV sites. Amenities include a swimming pool, a playground, and a jumping pillow if you’re traveling with kids, and pets are also welcome to stay and utilize the off-leash dog park.

Or, you can book a space at Oldman’s Creek Campground in Monroeville where you can select between their 20, 30 and 50-amp RV sites. There are sporting courts, a laundromat, and a children’s playground, as well as family-friendly activities planned during the summer months.

Exploring the City

Pick up your RV rental near National Park and visit the Red Bank Battlefield Park, which hugs the southern shores of the Delaware River. It was here that the Battle of Red Bank took place in 1777 during the American Revolutionary War, with remnants of Fort Mercer (used to prevent the British from traveling along the river) still visible today. At the center of the park stands the James and Ann Whitall House that served as a hospital where soldiers wounded during the battle were treated while a number of period cannons are also on displayed around the site.

If you’re traveling with kids, spend an afternoon exploring the Sanitarium Playground at Soupy Island - a former tuberculosis hospital that’s been transformed into a kid-friendly play area. During the Great Depression, it was a place where kids could let off some steam and get a free bowl of soup while today it’s packed with swings, slides, and a jungle gym. There are also a swimming pool and shallow wading pool where you can cool off during the summer months, not to mention a seesaw and old-fashioned carousel.

National Park makes a good base for visiting Philadelphia, which is just over 30 minutes’ drive to the north and renowned for its American Revolutionary sites. Get up close to the Liberty Bell and see where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed at Independence Hall, then recreate your very own “Rocky” moment outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art. You can join a historic prison tour of the Eastern State Penitentiary, then pick up seasonal produce and local treats at the famous Reading Terminal Market.

National Park is home to a supermarket where you can pick up supplies, as well as a couple of pizzerias for dining out. There is also a gas station if you want to fill up your motorhome rental in National Park or you can make the five-minute drive to Woodbury where there’s a more extensive range of service.

Whether you’re visiting Gloucester County for its bird-filled reserves or battlefields, book an RV in National Park and get started on your next adventure.
