Originally founded as the Quaker-friendly town of Elm in 1881 by Edward R Price, the name was changed to Narberth in 1893 and became incorporated in 1895. The original settler of the area was Edward Rees who arrived from Wales around 1682. His family surname changed over the years to Prees and finally Price.
The Welsh influence can be seen in some other local town names, such as Bryn Mawr, Radnor, Berwyn, and St Davids, which are all located on the Philadelphia Main Line along with the city. Known simply as the Main Line, it’s an area of Philadelphia that follows the route of the once prestigious Main Line railroad which connected the towns in the 19th century.
