Although Myakka City is a relatively young town, founded in 1915, there is evidence that there were Native Americans living and hunting in the area centuries before. Myakka was formed by four entrepreneurs who had dreams of becoming land mavens. They pooled their money together and purchased land in an area they knew a railroad would be laying down tracks, gambling that it would bring in an influx of residents. The streets were named after the first set of home buyers. The town was a success: the venture not only drew residents, an influx of businesses moved into the area, bringing in jobs. However, the Great Depression hit the region hard, and several businesses shut doors, and the locals had to move away seeking jobs.
Today, though the town never experienced another golden age of prosperity, it has recovered and retains its small-town charm. The closest large towns are Bradenton and Sarasota, about 30 and 25 miles to the west, respectively. Explore the nearby beach towns as well as the wilderness parks in your Myakka City RV rental.
Skip the hotels and get closer to nature in a Myakka City travel trailer rental. The Myakka River State Park has a little bit of everything -- except mountains. Sun-dappled woods, wildflower-clad meadows, wetlands, and rivers. Hikers and outdoorsmen can get an idea of what the first Spanish explorers saw when they arrived at Florida. The untouched wilderness is home to thousands of exotic animals, including the roseate spoonbill which was on the brink of extinction just a few short years ago, alligators, armadillos, bald eagles, and many more. There are several miles of hiking and biking trails, and leashed dogs are welcome though they should stay away from water edge where alligators often dwell. The longest trail is a 39-mile loop that takes hikers on a winding tour of dry prairies and palmetto groves, crossing streams on split log bridges and ancient stone bridges. Mosquitoes often are described as “aggressive” and using a deterrent is advised. When they get to be too much, retreat into a luxury RV rental at one of the campgrounds, many of which have hookups.
No visit to Florida is complete without a trip to one of the Gulf of Mexico beaches. Siesta Key beach is a highly popular beach at which college students flock to in droves during their spring break. At other times of the year, particularly in autumn and winter, the beach isn’t as crowded. The white, sugary, sandy beach is ideal for fat-tire biking, jogging, and beach volleyball. Search for seashells and starfish, explore the tidal pools and make sand sculptures. The warm turquoise waters are clear, suitable for snorkeling and paddleboarding. Parasailing and windsurfing are popular activities, as well. In early mornings and late evenings, schools of fish swim by in their never-ending search of food. Parking lots can fill up quickly; it’s advised that beach-goers arrive before 10 AM. Because there is no overnight parking allowed, it may be more convenient to park an RV rental at one of the private campgrounds minutes away and walk.
Although it’s tempting to drive an RV rental to all the local sightseeing spots, it’s sometimes easier to park at a local campground and use a smaller vehicle or mass transit. Get closer to nature at one of the three Myakka River State Park campgrounds. Most have hookups for your RV, and all are designed to be close to restroom and shower facilities. Well behaved pets are welcome.
Alternatively, one of the local private campgrounds may suit. The Sun n’ Fun RV Resort is a full-service resort with a dizzying array of amenities like a mega-slide, indoor and outdoor pools, and two dog parks.
Head into the fun-filled city in the comforts of a motorhome rental from Myakka City. See wild marine creatures up close at the Mote Aquarium. The Aquarium boasts touch tanks, reef exhibits, gators tank, and a 135,000-gallon shark habitat with bonnethead sharks, nurse sharks, and sandbar sharks. These exhibits are used as a part of the marine biologists and scientists’ research. In addition to educating the general public about the ocean life, researchers are actively learning about and working with wild animals in an effort to better understand their behavior and how to preserve the ocean environment for the future. Visitors can also opt for a shark encounter, a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium and the shark habitat. Help prepare food for the sharks and feed them from the edge of the tank.
Dolphins, whales, and sharks oh my! There are several dolphin tours along the coastline from Bradenton to Englewood. Float through the warm turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico and scan the horizons for a telltale fin slicing through the surface. Manatees, stingrays, and bottlenose dolphins are common sightings. Tour boats that go deeper into the Gulf may spot Orcas whales, humpback whales, and even sperm whales. Sea turtles occasionally will zip by at a surprisingly quick pace.
The fun doesn’t stop at the beach. Sarasota and the neighboring towns sizzle with energy, providing music, art, culture, and more. Book an RV rental in Myakka City, FL, and find your adventure in the warm sunshine of the great state of Florida.
