In 1830, after the passage of the Indian Removal Act signed by President Andrew Jackson, the Muscogee Creek tribe was part of the Five Civilized Tribes forced out of the American Southeast to Indian Territory here. The Indian Agency, which is a two-story stone building, was first built here in Muskogee. It was the location for meetings among the leaders of the Five Civilized Tribes. Today, it serves as a museum.
