The Great Outdoors

Just south of town is the Hiawatha National Forest in Manistique. With just under 900,000 acres of land, this national forest is home to shorelines along Lake Superior, Lake Huron, and Lake Michigan, allowing visitors to explore the beauty of three of the five Great Lakes all in one day. A wonderful destination for lake lovers, you’ll be able to explore lighthouses, islands, and miles upon miles of seemingly endless lake shores. In the summer, you can enjoy sunbathing, swimming, and lakeside picnics. In the winter, you’ll be able to enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing over 3,000 miles of roads and trails. No matter when you visit Hiawatha, you’ll find plenty to do.

Just a short drive east of the town center is the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near the outskirts of Munising. Situated on the shores of Lake Superior, these unique and bizarre geological formations carved out by years of water, ice, and wind make for a truly unforgettable experience. You’ll be able to kayak along the coast and get close to many of these formations, enjoy a walking tour of the coastline where you can visit lighthouses, or instead relax with some on-site fishing. More inland, there are roughly 100 miles of trails that lead you over wetlands, through forests, and to several hidden gems, such as waterfalls and bluffs. With the blue-green waters of Lake Superior and the striking sights all around you, you just might forget you’re almost to Canada.

Beautiful in every season, just a short drive from town is Sault Ste. Marie State Forest Area near Mackinaw City, Michigan. On the shores of both Lake Superior and Lake Huron, the forest area offers visitors a beautiful glimpse into everything that Michigan has to offer. With lakeshore on both the north and south ends of the park, miles and miles of trails through the forest, and even some historical sites regarding the early beginnings of Michigan, there is never a dull moment to be had. It's often said that if you want to catch the best fall colors in all of Michigan, head to Sault Ste. Marie.

RV Parks

When planning your Michigan adventure, you may need to find a campground or RV site for your Munising RV rental by owner. There are several options around town and along the shore of Lake Superior that are worth considering.

Just south of the town center is the Munising/Pictured Rocks KOA. At the KOA, guests will have access to full hookup sites, restroom and shower facilities, laundry facilities, and a swimming pool in the warmer months. Guests traveling with furry friends will also be able to make use of the on-site dog run.

A little farther south of town is the Otter Lake Campground & Lodges. At Otter Lake, guests will have access to electric or water/electric sites, restroom and shower facilities, and a variety of recreational activities such as basketball and boat rentals. Otter Lake is also open year-round.

Explore the City

Make sure to set aside some time to explore the local attractions and community spaces when you rent an RV in Munising; there is much to see and do around this charming city.

Just northeast of the town center, along the shoreline, is the Alger County Heritage Center. Here, you can learn about the early companies and businesses of the area, how the early settlers made their homes and livelihoods, and even explore some historical buildings that are located on-site. You’ll also be able to see plenty of artifacts from Michigan’s early days.

If you want to learn about the local art scene, you can head to the pottery workshop and gallery space in town, which features art from local artists and artisans. If you’re lucky, you may even get to meet some of the artists and see what they are working on. If you find something you like, you may also be able to buy it.

With its prime location on Lake Superior, it’s no surprise that Munising would be filled with all sorts of different local boat tours. You can enjoy a cruise through the Pictured Rocks, enjoy a glass-bottom boat tour to learn more about the various shipwrecks in the area, or just hire a boat to cruise around this “inland sea.” No matter what you want to do on the water, you’ll have no problem finding a way onto a boat.

At the end of a long and eventful day, you might be in the mood to treat yourself to something sweet. Find your way to the local bakery and get yourself a paczki. Brought over by the Polish immigrants, this doughnut is traditionally filled with some sort of fruit filling (cherries are very popular in Michigan) and dusted with powdered sugar.

When it comes time to restock and refuel your RV rental in Munising, you will have no problem finding a grocery store or gas station to meet your wants and needs.
