Once a hunting grounds for a number of Native American tribes like the Delaware, Iroquois, Shawnee, Minisink, Lenape and Paupack, the first known European inhabitant (on the record) was Nicholas Depui, who built a home in 1725. The Pocono region saw an influx of European settlers in mid-1700s. A former lumber town, the town’s original name was Forks because five major roads intersected in this town. It was, however, changed to Mount Pocono in 1864 to better appeal to visitors and new transplants. The area quickly developed a reputation as being the place for fresh air, adventure, fantastic fishing, and luxury hotels. During the Prohibition period, which hit Pennsylvania hard, the Poconos hotels advertised themselves as being “friendly mountain resorts” with a wink and an elbow nudge.

In the early 1950, the first commercial ski area in Pennsylvania was built: the Big Boulder Ski Area, and they were the first in the country to use snow machine to create artificial snow. Today, the area is highly popular vacation spot for both a rugged outdoorsman and chic socialite.

The closest large town is Scranton, a little over 30 miles north.

Discover Mount Pocono

The Great Outdoors

The Poconos is used as a catchall term for this region, which has several large state parks, preserves, and game lands, like the Pinchot State Forest, Big Poconos State Park, Hickory Run State Park, and several others. Altogether, there are nearly 500,00 acres of mountains, lakes, rivers and streams, and pure wilderness. When you book an RV in Mount Pocono, a whole world of outdoor adventure and fun will open up to you.

In the Pinchot State Forest alone, which has nearly 45,000 acres of land, the main hiking trail is over 26 miles, and there are many other shorter trails. Small waterfalls and babbling streams provide a soothing background sound for the hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. Fishing, which is reputed to be one of the best in Pennsylvania, is plentiful. Anglers and fly fishers can catch trout, bass, pickerel, and crappie. Hunting is allowed in Pinchot and the nearby game lands as well during the appropriate seasons (be aware that Pennsylvania is very strict about hunting licenses and its rules). Primitive camping is also permitted, though it’s recommended that inexperienced campers use established campgrounds and sites. Campers must obtain permits.

Another popular destination is the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (also referred to as The Gap), which is about 30 miles east, as the crow flies. It’s a massive 70,000-acre park with over 100 miles of trails. The river has carved a path into the Pennsylvania mountains so deep that from ridgetops, it’s over a 1,000-foot drop. A portion of the Appalachian Trail crosses the Gap. Heads up: this park sprawls across both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The regulations for hunting are different for each state, and hunters must obtain separate hunting licenses for each if they plan to explore both sides of the park. Photographers and avid outdoorsmen will enjoy exploring this park. There are waterfalls, gasp-inducing sheer gorges and ravines, and open meadows in which wildlife frolics. In wintertime, the nearby Shawnee Mountain Ski Area provides groomed skiing slopes suitable for beginners and experienced skiers alike. RV Parks

When you book a camper rental in Mount Pocono, don’t forget to figure out where you’ll park while you explore the Poconos region. Several parks in the area allow RV camping, though not all have hookups. Pinchot State Forest, for example, allows RVs and campers at some campsites, but there are no hookups nor water. Amenities, if any, are barebone.

If hookups and amenities are needed, there are several private campgrounds in the area with varying degrees of service. The Hemlock Campground and Cottages in Tobyhanna, for example, offers 30 amps electric, water, and cable. Dumping, however, is an additional fee.

In contrast, Scotrun RV Resort in Scotrun has full hookups and other amenities like showers and laundry facilities.

Exploring the City

In spite of being surrounded by miles and miles of rugged wilderness, Mount Pocono is quite civilized. Nearby Great Wolf Lodge, a hotel, water park, and entertainment center wrapped all into one, is just a few minutes away. The water park features several water slides, pools, and hot springs. Day passes can be obtained only online via their website, and their parking lots can accommodate your RV rental.

The Poconos Raceway, which is known for its “tricky triangle,” is a challenging course at which NASCAR and INDYCAR host races every year. Sign up for an European-style race car lesson at driving school designed by Bertil Roos, one of the most prolific drivers whose career spanned decades. Jump into a Formula 2000 race car and learn how to navigate the tricky curves and how to handle a powerful car! The track is also available for private rental if you have a car you’d like to take out for a spin. No speed limits!

Try your luck at the dice at the oldest Casino in the area, with over 80 table games, and nearly 1,800 slot machines. The Poker Parlor features nine different card games, including a high-stakes no-hold-barred table. Test your ability to bluff and strategist with the best of them.

Did you know? Casino comes from an Italian word that means “little house,” which was a social gathering place where people could listen to music or play board games. The Village Malt Shop, which was originally a 1920s dance hall, shares space with the Casino Theater. The shop is a blast from the past. Decorated in a nostalgic 1950s style, it dishes up old-fashioned malt drinks, ice cream sodas, phosphates, and dozens of different sundaes. Ice cream is imported straight from Hershey.

After a day of outdoor adventure and fun in your motorhome rental in Mount Pocono, unwind by visiting one of the local malt shops! Enjoy the lush green woods and pure wilderness the area has to offer. Rent a travel trailer in Mount Pocono, PA, and go exploring!
