Serving as the seat of Susquehanna County, Montrose is a small borough in northeast Pennsylvania whose name combines the French word “mont” with the name of a prominent citizen Dr. Rose. It was first settled in 1812 by the descendants of the British Naval Officer, Sir Peter Warren, who was granted the land by grateful American soldiers.

Originally Montrose was a hub for creameries and the manufacturing of cut glass and lumber before becoming renowned for the drilling of Marcellus shale. It played a significant role in the Northern Trail of the Underground Railroad, with escaped slaves being housed by residents here on their journey to Canada.

With a historic district at its core, Montrose is an attractive place to rent an RV while exploring Susquehanna County. It’s within easy access of campgrounds in both Pennsylvania and New York State and offers opportunities for bird watching, fishing, and hiking reserves.

Discover Montrose

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Montrose and drive southwest to the Loyalsock State Forest near Dushore, which sprawls across the northern tier of Pennsylvania’s “Endless Mountains.” Explore one of the numerous trails that extend through this “working forest,” then make the short drive east to the Ricketts Glen State Park, which is home to more than 20 waterfalls. Follow the hiking trails that lead to these picturesque cascades or go fishing and kayaking on the waters of Lake Jean, with cross-country skiing and ice fishing popular during the winter months.

Just south of Montrose lies the Dick and Nancy Eales Preserve at Moosic Mountain, which protects one of the largest intact scrub oak forests left in North America. It supports a healthy mosaic of fire-adapted plants and low-growing heath that attract both birds and butterflies. The Dick and Nancy Eales Preserve is a popular destination for bird watchers and mountain bikers, as well as community groups who work tirelessly to protect this fragile ecology.

Drive in the other direction from Montrose to Windsor, NY, and you’ll arrive at the Hawkins Pond Nature Area, which lies adjacent to the Hawkins Pond State Forest. Aside from fishing, this joint recreation area encompasses around seven miles of walking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing trails that explore the white pine, oak, and Norway spruce forest. The area is also frequented by birdwatchers who come to spot herons and hawks that are regularly spotted in the sprawling wetlands.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Montrose and make the short drive to the Montrose Campground, which lies partway between Montrose and New Milford. It features an in-ground pool, mini-golf course, and horseshoe pits, as well as a children’s playground and fishing pond where you can cast a line to see what’s biting.

On the other side of New Milford lies The Camp at East Lake, a pet-friendly campground that offers a selection of full hookups, with either 30 or 50-amp services. There are a range of recreational courts and a children’s playground to keep young guests entertained, as well as a 40-acre lake for fishing, swimming, and boating during the summer months.

Alternatively, you can head across the border into New York State where you’ll find the Pine Crest Campground, which is set on 20 acres of riverfront woodlands and fields. This pet-friendly RV destination offers full hookups and 50-amp sites, along with a swimming pool, children’s playground, and a boat dock on its fishing pond for canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing.

You can make the 30-minute drive south to Tunkhannock and its Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Montrose and head to the Center for Anti-Slavery Studies that is housed inside the town’s AME Zion Church. The museum features a range of artifacts, documents, and exhibits that detail the history of anti-slavery activity in Susquehanna County. Learn about Northeastern Pennsylvania’s role as a stop on the way to freedom in Canada, with many residents taking enormous risks to assist escaped slaves on their journey.

Another destination where you can delve into the people and events that have shaped the region is the Susquehanna County Historical Society, which occupies the second floor of Montrose’s library building. The exhibits include a collection of paintings and genealogical information about local families, as well as artifacts once owned by county residents. Learn about the Native American tribes that once inhabited the region, then browse the military collection of objects dating back to the Civil War.

Make the 15-minute drive from Montrose to the town of New Milford, which is home to the Old Mill Village Museum. It’s famously home to a covered bridge that dates to 1850, as well as numerous buildings of historical interest that have been relocated here. Browse the artifacts and handicrafts dating from the late-18th to early 20th centuries or attend one of the seasonal events that bring the region’s history to life.

Montrose is home to a supermarket where you can stock up on grocery supplies, as well as a couple of restaurants and cafes for dining out. There’s also a gas station if you need to fill up your camper rental in Montrose.

Whether you’re visiting Susquehanna County for its historical museums or birdwatching reserves, book an RV in Montrose and start planning your Pennsylvania adventure.
