Known as both the seat of Wayne County and the “Houseboat Capital of the World,” Monticello is a pleasant, small community in southern Kentucky, a few hours' drive south of both Lexington and Louisville. The city refers to itself as the “Houseboat Capital of the World” thanks to the high number of manufacturers based in Monticello.

Monticello first became a city and a county seat back in 1800, founded by veterans of the Revolutionary War. An oil boom towards the end of the 19th century put Monticello on the map as an upstart place to live and work, while dozens of companies and factories moved to the area shortly after to benefit from its first-rate electrical grids, water access, and steadily growing population of eligible workers.

When you book an RV in Monticello, you can do anything you see fit while taking a pleasant ride through the state. Nearby Lake Cumberland accounts for much of the local tourism, as do many of the state’s other national parks, state parks, forests, lakefront recreation areas, and more. Charming old buildings in town and incredibly easy access to and from the city make little Monticello an ideal place to rent an RV and serve as your home base throughout the duration of your Kentucky explorations.

The Great Outdoors

There is much to see and do in Kentucky, particularly with regard to its diverse smattering of nature parks and recreation areas. Around every corner lies some sort of campground or lakefront nature space where you can park your Monticello RV rental and make it your temporary home. Nearby Lake Cumberland has a vast surface area, with many small parks dotting its shores. General Burnside Island State Park is one such place that you will find to be an absolute delight. The park is named for General Ambrose Burnside, a Union general who stationed his troops on the small island during the Civil War. The park has lake access for boaters, campgrounds, and one of the best golf courses in the entire state.

Green River Lake State Park is a bit farther away but worth the trip nonetheless. This amazing summer hotspot is home to a massive marina that can house hundreds of boats, along with a large campground you can use when you need a place to stay with your Monticello motorhome rental. On top of all that, there are fantastic swimming areas that help guests cool off during the hot, humid summers, and 28 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. Daniel Boone National Forest has well over two million acres of forest land in southern Kentucky, packed with amazing wildlife and spectacular scenery. The forest brings in over two million people a year, with 600 miles of hiking trails, hundreds of recreation sites, and the Red River Gorge which is itself a National Natural Landmark. You can hike, swim, bike, fish, kayak, canoe, or go hunting in this sprawling forest, or use it for camping when you rent an RV.

If you are unsure where to go next, make a trip to Mammoth Cave National Park to see one of the largest cave systems in the entire world. This interesting world heritage site is a great place to camp while you explore the 400 miles of subterranean caverns, impressive chambers, and dark passages teeming with different bat species.

RV Parks

There is no shortage of places to camp when you book a motorhome rental near Monticello. Lake Cumberland RV Park and Golf Driving Range could be a nice place to stay for a few days, with a refreshing indoor pool and a large driving range to practice your golf swing.

Shoreline RV Park is just north of Monticello, close to local museums, shops, and restaurants. Extended stays and short-term stays are welcomed at this park, with gravel camping sites, full hookups for electric and water, and rolling meadows that make for great outdoor recreation.

City Sightseeing

Monticello is neither the largest nor the liveliest of towns, but you will find a charming atmosphere when you visit the town for your next vacation. There are plenty of barbecue restaurants with succulent Southern-style cooking in the city, along with wineries, taverns, art galleries, antique shops, and a smattering of other locally owned businesses that you can peruse while you venture through town on foot. Historic homes are a delight to see while you walk around the town, like the Brown-Lanier House, the West-Metcalfe House, or the Raccoon John Smith House, all of which are among the first buildings erected in this historically rich town. The West-Metcalfe House even served as a headquarters for three different Civil War generals, adding to its historical significance.

The Wayne County Historical Museum is a fabulous depository of antiques, artifacts, and old photos telling the story of Wayne County. You can visit and go on a guided tour of the museum space. The museum sits in an old Victorian hotel that was naturally air-conditioned thanks to a cave underneath the structure.

There are also quite a few celebrations and big festivals in Monticello, so depending on when you head to town to pick up your Monticello campervan rental, you can join in on the fun. The Cornbread Festival is a celebration of mouth-watering Southern cooking, with a particular interest in the famous bread itself. The Autumn Raft-Up is another fun festival that you can take part in while you're here.
