The Great Outdoors

An interesting place to visit is Seneca Caverns, discovered in 1872 by two young boys, Peter Rutan, and Henry Komer. While out walking, their dog chased a rabbit into some brush, and they both disappeared. When the boys went to find their dog, they fell through a hole to the first level of the cave. Luckily they found their dog and returned home to tell of the discovery. Since then, a total of seven levels have been discovered to a depth of 110 feet, along with an underground river. Guided tours, lasting around an hour, are available. There is plenty of parking at the caverns, even for your luxury RV rental from Monroe.

Lying along the shores of Sandusky Bay, that leads into Lake Erie is the Pickerel Creek Wildlife Area. The majority of the area is wetlands, but there are areas of wood and brush as well. Plentiful fishing is available, and you can catch crappie, catfish, and perch during the season. There is plenty of wildlife in the area including white-tailed deer and an abundance of birds and waterfowl. It’s a great place to visit when you rent a motorhome in Monroeville.

The 838-acre Findley State Park was once a state forest and today still contains a range of pines and hardwoods. At the heart of the park is Findley Lake which is well-stocked with bass, bluegill, and crappie. Boating is allowed on the lake, but only in canoes, rowboats or electric engine boats. You’ll also discover an 18-hole disc golf course, and 16 miles of trails through the park. Hiking and biking is allowed on all the trails, and there is a dedicated 11-mile mountain bike loop.

RV Parks

Exploring the City

For an interesting and educational few hours, head to the Thomas A Edison Birthplace Museum in Milan. Born in 1847, the small brick house was his childhood home and features a collection of rare Edison items. The exhibits include early inventions, documents, and mementos kept by the family.

In neighboring Bellevue, a railroad museum has been established to preserve the history of the Mad River and NKP Railroad that ran through the town in 1839. Along with original rail cars from the period, the museum also has uniforms, timetables, and other items from the old railroad buildings. The museum is definitely hands-on, and if the rail car door is open with the steps down, it means come on in!

Historic Lyme Village is a great place to visit if you have an interest in architecture. The most impressive building is the John Wright Mansion, a brick home built between 1880 and 1882. Other period buildings include the hardware store, general store, and woodworking shop.

As a small community, Monroeville only has a small selection of restaurants and a couple of grocery stores, and a couple of fuel stations. Just a couple of miles east is Norwalk, a much larger town with a much greater selection, including several pizza restaurants, grill bars and Chinese.

If movies are your thing, then try the Star View Drive-In movie theater between Monroeville and Norwalk. The movie sound is broadcast over FM radio, or you can hire a radio on-site. There is a snack bar selling food and drink, and a playground for the kids if the movie becomes too much!
