Just 14 miles north of Toledo, Ohio and 25 miles south of Detroit sits Monroe. Resting right along the River Raisin, this area was originally settled by the Native Americans, but in the late 17th century, the area was claimed for France. After the Revolutionary War, a part of this region of Michigan south of the River Raisin was given to Canada by the native Potawatomi. During the War of 1812, this region became incredibly important in the battle between the United States and Great Britain.
