The sprawling swamp-side city of Monroe is located far north of Alexandria, near Rayville. Monroe has a long history which stretches back as far as the late 1600s when the area was under the control of the French, who sent expeditions to Louisiana during this time. The first settlement to be built in this area was a trading post known as Ft. Miro.

The U.S. eventually bought the land from the French in the early 19th century, and the city's name was eventually changed to Monroe. Now one of the largest cities in the region, RV rentals in Monroe offer access to great city activities and exciting natural wonders in the surrounding area.

Discover Monroe

The Great Outdoors

There are some incredible sights around when you rent a camper in Monroe, and one you can see without leaving the city limits is the Chauvin Swamp Tract. This park is part of the Russell Sage State Wildlife Management Area, which covers some of the last hardwood forests in the Mississippi River floodplains. A great place for bird watchers, this park features an array of waterfowl and wading birds, as well as an impressive variety of flora, including willows, elms, and many more. The Chavin Bayou offers plenty of watersport activities including fishing with catfish, bass, and crappie all available.

Another park to consider visiting with an RV rental from Monroe is the Black Bayou Wildlife Management Area. This 5,300-acre park has a similar environment to the Chavin Swamp Tract as it contains hardwood forests and swamplands and is an ideal place to experience a typical Louisiana swamp, complete with cypress trees swarming with frogs and snakes. Boardwalk trails make this park easy to explore, and the local wildlife will make the experience extra-special, with alligators, snapping turtles, and beautiful yellow prothonotary warblers inhabiting the park.

If you're looking for a typical city park to explore when you rent a motorhome in Monroe, then plan a visit to Forsythe Park. This park consists of wooded areas mixed with playing fields and is a good option if you're looking for somewhere to have a picnic or walk your pup. The park features tennis courts if you feel like getting competitive, and there's even a swimming pool to cool down on a summer's day. It's also an ideal place for kids, with a playground for them to enjoy and plenty of open space to play.

RV Parks

Parking your RV rental near Monroe will be a breeze due to the many campgrounds in and around the city, for example, Ouachita RV Park. This campground contains over 70 gravel campsites, each of which has full hookups that support 30 and 50 amp electric. This campground is spacious and has room for big rigs, and some pull-through sites are available. Amenities are limited to restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. On-site activities include a rec hall, fishing pond, and a playground.

If you'd rather be away from the city when you rent a camper in Monroe, then consider a stay at Lake' d'Arbonne State Park near Farmerville. The campground here features nearly 70 paved sites, all of which have electric and water hookups with 30 and 50 amp service. Amenities on site are limited to showers, restrooms, and laundry. However, the camp's proximity to Lake d'Arbonne means there's plenty to do, from fishing to boating.

Exploring the City

Getting an RV rental in Monroe means you'll be in one of the prettiest and best-equipped cities in the region, with high-class shops and beautiful restaurants found throughout the city. One of the best places to visit in Monroe is the Biedenharn Museum. This unique museum was home to one of the first bottlers of Coca-Cola, Joeseph A. Biedenharn, as well as his daughter Emy-Lou, who was a famous singer. The house is beautifully preserved and contains rare furnishings, artwork, and much more that will make you feel like you've stepped back in time. There's also the Coke Museum, which contains vintage memorabilia and even shows off the original bottling process which helped make Coca-Cola so successful.

There are lots of incredible family activities to consider when you rent a motorhome in Monroe, and another one is the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo. This zoo is home to many rare critters such as hyena, tigers, and leopards, so you'll no doubt see something you've never seen before. The zoo even has a safari boat ride, where you can view the animals from a swampy Louisiana river. There's also a children's zoo, an on-site restaurant, and educational summer camp.

You might instead want to take in some of the culture Monroe has to offer, in which case you should look into the Masur Museum of Art. Boasting the largest selection of art in Northeast Louisiana, this museum features work by hundreds of artists both classic and contemporary, such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Joan Miro, and many more. The museum is housed within the Tudor estate of Masur family and is a work of art in and of itself.
