Originally known as Tolersville, Mineral was officially incorporated in 1902 and named in honor of its lucrative gold mining industry. More than 15 gold mines were established surrounding the town during its heyday, with a zinc and lead mine also operating during the 1970s.
Today, Mineral clusters around a heritage-listed historic district of late-19th century and early-20th-century buildings while being on the doorstep of Shenandoah National Park. Its proximity to family-friendly campgrounds and the cultural sights of Richmond and Charlottesville make it a great place to rent an RV while exploring central Virginia.
Book an RV rental in Mineral and make the short drive north to the Lake Anna State Park, which hugs the northern shores of this sprawling body of water. It’s a hub for water sports, with everything from wakeboarding and windsurfing to kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on offer. Lake Anna State Park also features more than 15 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding that range from 1/2 a mile long to over five miles in length.
Mineral lies just to the east of Shenandoah National Park, which is famously home to the Skyline Drive that extends along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Stop at some of the 75 lookout points that dot this 105-mile route to soak up the sweeping views across the Shenandoah Valley. The Skyline Drive also accesses many of the park’s hiking trails, which include short waterfall hikes and extensive treks along parts of the legendary Appalachian Trail.
If you continue driving west, you’ll arrive at the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, which extends across 1.8 million acres and comprises one of the largest tracts of public land in the United States. It’s home to Mount Rogers, the highest peak in Virginia, and the historic fire lookout tower at Elliott Knob. Take in the views across the "Grand Canyon of the South” at the Breaks Interstate Park or explore one of the undeveloped wilderness areas that are renowned for their waterfalls.
Pick up your travel trailer rental in Mineral and make the short drive west to the Small Country Campground, which offers full hookup and partial hookup RV sites. In addition to its swimming beach and lake-based water activities, there’s also an outdoor swimming pool, mini-golf course, and children’s playground to keep young visitors entertained.
North of Mineral is the Christopher Run Campground whose spacious wooded RV sites overlook the shores of Lake Anna. Aside from their full hookups, they also offer a recreation hall, children’s playground, fishing piers, and a mini-golf course, together with an on-site camping store where you can pick up essentials and snacks.
Travel across the causeway that spans Lake Anna, and you’ll arrive at the Rocky Branch Marina & Campground. Their RV sites offer access to electricity and water, as well as a dump station, with an on-site camping store and boat ramp so you can easily get out on the water.
Or, you can make the 30-minute drive west to Zion Crossroads and its Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.
