Situated part way between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Millersville is a laid-back rural and residential community in Maryland. It was named after George Miller who was in charge of the town’s first post office, which was established in 1841 along the Annapolis & Elkridge Railroad.

Today, Millersville retains its crossroads village charm, with the heritage-listed Childs Residence at its heart, a whitewashed property that once served as the post master’s home and the local general store. The peaceful ambiance of the town makes it an ideal place to rent an RV to discover the natural wonders and history of Anne Arundel County.

Discover Millersville

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Millersville and drive north to the Severn Run Natural Environment Area, which sprawls across 1,600 acres around the Severn Run. There are plenty of remote hiking trails that will appeal to adventurous walkers, as well as fishing spots along the waterway. Try your luck at catching resident trout and yellow perch near Old Mill Road while enjoying the peace and tranquility.

If you want to get up close to the native wildlife, drive west to the Patuxent Research Refuge, which is the only national wildlife refuge in the United States that has been established to support wildlife research. Stop in at the visitor center to learn about global issues affecting wildlife and natural habitats, then stretch your legs along one of the hiking trails that wind between woodlands and the lakeshores. Keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer, beavers, and great blue herons, as well as bald eagles and migratory neotropical birds that arrive during the winter months.

Traveling with kids? They can let loose on the play equipment of Whitemarsh Park, a 182-acre multi-use recreational area in Bowie. In addition to a range of ballfields, a picnic pavilion, and a campfire circle, it’s home to the Bowie Playhouse where everything from musicals to British mysteries and slapstick comedies are presented. There are also miles of forested trails for hiking and biking, not to mention a 1.5-mile-long improved trail that’s wheelchair accessible.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Millersville and head to the nearby Washington DC/Capitol KOA, a well-equipped campground. It comes with an outdoor pool, basketball court, and a jumping pillow, with daily shuttles provided to access all the sights of Washington, D.C.

You can drive west to Cherry Hill Park in College Park, which offers full hookups in a variety of standard, premium, back-in, and pull-through options. There are two solar-heated pools and a hot tub to enjoy, as well as a splash park, playground, and mini-golf course. If you want to bring your pets, there are two fenced dog runs, as well as a dog walking service offered.

If you’re after something more basic, you can also head across Baltimore to the Orems Trailer Park, which has a handful of short-term sites amongst its long-term residential community. Pets are also welcome to stay, and it’s within easy access of shopping facilities and laundromats.

If you just need a place to sleep, there is a Walmart in nearby Severn where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

After picking up your RV trailer rental in Millersville, drive through the rural surrounds to Kinder Farm Park, which is named after a family that farmed the land here during the late-19th century. It’s home to a visitor center where vintage farming tools and machinery are on show, together with information panels detailing the agricultural history of Anne Arundel County. Also nearby is the beautifully restored farmhouse that was built by the Kinder family in 1925, offering visitors an insight into the lifestyle of farmers during the early-20th century.

Another fascinating way to discover the region’s history is along the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail, which begins at Boulters Way in Arnold and ends near the Baltimore Light Rail’s Cromwell Station in Glen Burnie. It follows the route of the Baltimore & Annapolis Railroad through Millersville and the surrounding natural woodland areas, with historical markers lining the way. Learn about the communities and individuals who helped to develop the railroad while admiring the old switch boxes and railway track that still remain.

Millersville also makes an ideal base for exploring Baltimore, which lies just a 30-minute drive to the north. Spend a day visiting its world-class museums and art galleries, then visit the National Aquarium and Maryland Science Center at Inner Harbor. Or, you can head southwest for a day in Washington, D.C. to discover the world-renowned Smithsonian Museums and tour the city’s national landmarks, such as The Mall, the Lincoln Memorial, and the White House.

Millersville is home to a handful of grocery stores where you can stock up on supplies, or you can make the five-minute drive south to the Waugh Chapel Towne Centre shopping mall. There are also gas stations if you want to fill up your motorhome rental in Millersville.

Whether you’re visiting Anne Arundel County for its rail history or wildlife-filled parks, book an RV in Millersville and start exploring.
