On the eastern edge of central Texas, the town of Milano offers rural, small-town Texas charm mixed with a little bit of Great Plains and a dash of the Texas Hill Country. In 1874, the railroad set up a depot at what would become Milano. As the railroads grew, so did the population as they flocked to claim farmland in the region for easy access to the railroads. Visitors to Milano can still expect to see some of the agricultural sides of Milano. However, visitors to Milano are also often looking for a little more exposure to the Texas wilderness. With its relatively central location in the state, just a short drive in just about any direction will get you into a completely different region of Texas. You can continue west for the rocky terrain of the Hill Country, east for the tranquility of the piney woods, or north for the Great Plains.

There is no public transportation in Milano. However, you don’t need to worry; it’s true what they say, everything’s bigger in Texas – including the roads. You should have no difficulty navigating your RV rental in Milano.

When you book an RV in Milam County, you are giving yourself the opportunity to fully explore the Lone Star State in all its natural glory. Not only that, you will be able to experience those big skies, that home-style cooking, and the Southern hospitality of Texas.

Discover Milano

The Great Outdoors

Just a short drive to the southeast is the Lake Somerville State Park near Brenham, Texas. Here, you can experience the lakes and plains of Texas. With 40 miles of trails, you will get to explore the lakeshore of Lake Somerville as well as the forests and grassland meadows found throughout the park. If you feel like indulging in the lake, you can rent a canoe or kayak from a few different points on the lake. As you’re hiking throughout the park, be sure to keep an eye out for some local critters, such as river otters, bobcats, and even alligators.

Just a short drive to the east of Milano is the Sam Houston National Forest, where you get to experience the eastern piney woods. One of just four national forests in the state of Texas, Sam Houston is just north of Houston, Texas. Previous archaeological digs in the region have told researchers that humans may have lived in the area of Sam Houston National Forest as far back as 12,000 years ago. If you want to hike through this historic forest, then you can jump on the section of the Lone Star Hiking Trail that cuts through the park or rather enjoy several of the other day-use trails found throughout the park.

All that’s left, within easy reach, to enjoy is the Texas Hill Country. This you can easily accomplish at the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge near Marble Falls, Texas. Here, you can visit old-growth forests, hike over rocky terrain, and enjoy calm and cool streams and rivers. Not only that, but Balcones Canyonlands is a wildlife refuge. You may see jackrabbits, foxes, and coyotes. Not only that, but the refuge is home to the golden-cheeked warbler, the only bird that lives exclusively in Texas, as well as several migratory species from Mexico.
