Midlothian, a city of about 60,000 residents on the outskirts of Richmond, was once a thriving coal mining community in the 1800s. Now it exists primarily as a residential community for those who want to work and recreate in Richmond but prefer a slower life outside the city. When you book an RV in Midlothian, VA , enjoy the area’s sights, particularly the vibrant history of this little town, without needing to worry about where you’ll park your vehicle.

There is really no public transportation system between Richmond and Midlothian though, so you’ll need to drive your Midlothian RV rental between any of the attractions that you visit here. Fortunately, Richmond doesn’t get quite the traffic that you would find in some of the larger East Coast cities.

RV Parks Near Midlothian

There are almost no dedicated RV parks nearby and not that many in the whole Richmond Metro area either. Fortunately, there are a few state parks with electrical and water hookups.

Pocahontas State Park, 22 miles to the south of Midlothian, has about 50 sites ranging in size from 25 to 65 feet in length. All of them include a picnic table and fire pit. The park has over 60 miles of trails, an aquatic center for swimming, and kayak rentals for those wanting to paddle the park’s lake.

Kosmo Village, Richmond North/Dominion KOA, and Americamps RV Resort are all located 30-45 miles northeast of Midlothian along I-95. While these aren’t particularly close to Midlothian or Richmond, they are options if you’re unable to find a more convenient camping site for the Midlothian rental RV during your stay.

Truck stops can be found to the north, south, and east of Richmond along I-95 and I-64. It’s a good idea to fuel up at these places as the pumps will be easier to navigate with a large vehicle and have dump sites.

For last minute provisions, there are two Walmarts in the Midlothian area. One of the Walmarts is a few miles east of the city center, just off Midlothian Turnpike. However, if you’re staying at Pocahontas State Park, the nearest Walmart is a few miles north in the Chattanooga Plaza shopping center.

Exploring the City of Midlothian

While Midlothian is now mostly known as a bedroom community to the much larger city of Richmond, it has a storied past as one of the great industrial centers of early America. The area’s coal mines served a key role in the development of the railroads in the mid-19th century.

If you’re interested in learning about the history of the area, stop by the Chesterfield County Museum, about 20 miles to the southeast of Midlothian. It’s a great place to get an understanding of how the mines led to the development of the city and its transformation throughout the 20th century.

If you’re bringing the kids along on the Midlothian motorhome rental vacation, you might want to check out the Sky Zone Trampoline Park. Here they can run, jump, and burn off some of that excess energy built up during those long hours on the road. The park is three miles east of the city center, off the Midlothian Turnpike.

Those with an appreciation for history will enjoy a day of antiquing at the Buckingham Antique Mall. It’s right in the center of town and has all kinds of great jewelry, knick-knacks, and treasures from the city’s past.

Most visitors to Midlothian will spend a fair amount of time in Richmond though, as it’s only a 30-minute drive to the east. As the former capital of the Confederacy, there’s loads of Civil War era history to be explored here. Additionally, there’s plenty of shopping, eating, and nightlife opportunities with some of the best ones found at the Short Pump Mall outdoor shopping center.

Getting Outside Near Midlothian

While there are great open spaces to explore with the Midlothian camper rental in the Richmond area, one of the best (and closest) to Midlothian is the Midlothian Mines Park. The park has several historical sites including ruins from the abandoned mine shaft. Its trails are also a popular place for joggers if you’re thinking about squeezing in a morning run.

A trip to Midlothian wouldn’t be complete without a visit to nearby Shenandoah National Park. The most popular activity here is actually just touring the famed Skyline Drive, which meanders along the park’s many ridges. If you don’t stop too many times, the drive takes a few hours. However, there are also quite a few places to camp with your Midlothian rental camper if you’re thinking about staying longer.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is about a six and a half hour drive from Midlothian, but is consistently ranked as one of the most popular national parks in the country. Visitors from around the country come to enjoy the lush forests and majestic views of its fog covered peaks. Unlike many of the country’s other parks, this one has relatively good weather year round, too. Camping with your Midlothian, VA RV rental is easy, as the park has numerous sites with hookups.
