Nestled in the foothills of the Shawangunk Mountains, Middletown is a picturesque city in New York’s Hudson Valley region. It was officially incorporated in 1888 and flourished as a stopover on the Erie Railroad and the New York, Ontario and Western Railway during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

With the 18th-century spire of the First Congregational Church soaring at its heart, Middletown is now a lively residential city that falls within the New York City metropolitan area. It’s an ideal place to rent an RV while exploring the state parks of the Hudson River Valley and the open-air Museum Village in nearby Monroe.

Discover Middletown

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Middletown and make the short drive northeast to the Highland Lakes State Park, which encompasses more than 3,000 acres of undeveloped woods and lakes. The informal trails are a popular setting for hiking and horseback riding, with fishing and model airplane flying also on offer. While exploring the park, keep an eye out for the foundations of the now-deserted Camp Orange, with dogs on a leash welcome to join you.

To the south of Middletown lies the Goosepond Mountain State Park, which encompasses 1,706 acres of undeveloped landscapes near Chester. It’s a picturesque destination for horseback riding and hiking, with a short boardwalk and a series of more extensive trails for exploring the bird-filled wetlands. The area is also famously home to a rock shelter that is believed to have been used as a hideout by the loyalist leader Claudius Smith during the American Revolutionary War.

Farther east is the Schunemunk Mountain State Park, which encompasses around 2,700 acres and over 20 miles of trails that run through rugged mountain terrain and forested glades. The 1,664-foot summit of Schunemunk Mountain extends along a dramatic ridge between Smith’s Clove and Salisbury Mills and can be accessed along numerous trails. One of the most popular is the Long Path that ascends the mountain via High Knob, eventually joining the Highland Trail to Gonzaga Park.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Middletown and make the short drive south to the Black Bear Campground, which can accommodate RVs of all sizes. Aside from full hookups with 20, 30, or 50 amp service, there’s also a children’s playground, an air-conditioned pavilion, and a heated swimming pool.

To the west of Middletown is the Deerpark/New York City NW KOA Holiday, which can accommodate RVs up to 85 feet in length. It’s ideal for families, with a jumping pillow, rock wall, and bicycle rentals available, as well as a swimming pool and a dog park where your four-legged friends can roam free.

A short drive north will take you to the Korn's Shawangunk Kill Campground, which nestles in 39 acres of wooded land in the Catskills. Aside from their 98 sites, there’s a children’s playground, an in-ground pool, and a laundry facility, as well as recreational courts and a camping store where you can pick up essentials.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Middletown and explore the city on foot, with the downtown area clustered with global eateries and unique boutiques. Admire the historic Paramount Theatre where films and concerts are regularly held, then head to the O&W Building, a Richardsonian Romanesque train station that dates to 1893. Also of note is the Hillside Cemetery that was designed by British landscape architect Calvert Vaux who also played a part in the design of New York City’s Central Park.

If you’re in need of some retail therapy, make the short drive east to the Galleria at Crystal Run, which is the second-largest mall in the Hudson Valley region. It houses around 120 shops, and aside from its shopping opportunities, the Galleria at Crystal Run has a good selection of eateries, not to mention a 16-screen theater and a ten-pin bowling alley.

A 25-minute drive from Middletown is the Museum Village, a replica village that illustrates daily life in the region during the 19th century. Wander through the open-air grounds where a range of historic buildings and structures are displayed, together with a large collection of eclectic artifacts. Join a village tour to learn how the region transitioned from a rural to an industrial economy, with reenactments regularly performed by their costumed staff.

Middletown is home to numerous supermarkets where you can purchase grocery supplies, as well as a good selection of fast food eateries and restaurants if you want to dine out. There are also numerous gas stations if you need to fill up your campervan rental in Middletown.
