Although the city of Mesquite is considered to be a suburb of Dallas, it happens to rank among the largest and most populous cities in all of Texas. This incredible city was first founded as a railroad stop on the Texas & Pacific Railroad which connected the settlements of central Texas to southern Louisiana. Historically, Mesquite was an agrarian community and a railroad hub for transporting goods back east. After World War II, the suburban sprawl of Dallas began to creep outwards, engulfing the outlying towns and urbanizing them in the process.

Today, Mesquite is one of the best-kept secrets in Texas, but it won’t remain that way for long. With easy interstate access, proximity to international airports, and public transportation connecting the city with its larger neighbors Fort Worth and Dallas, Mesquite could not be a better place to rent an RV. The food in the city is absolutely mouthwatering, with famous Texan BBQ on the menu at nearly every establishment. An awesome nightlife scene, gorgeous landscapes, a variety of museums and theaters, and lovely city parks are some of the other reasons why choosing to book a camper rental in Mesquite is an exceptional idea. If that weren’t already enough, Mesquite is the Rodeo Capital of Texas, a pretty big deal considering Texas is known for its cowboy culture and old western roots.

Explore the Outdoors

Lost in all the hype and praise for Mesquite, is the realization that Texas is a wonderland of scenic sights and beauty. When you rent an RV in this region of Texas, you still have the option to leave the cityscapes of the Dallas metropolitan area and venture off into the more rural parts of the Lone Star State. Cedar Hill State Park is on the periphery of the metro area south of Dallas, so it can hardly be considered rural Texas. This glorious urban park sits on Joe Pool Lake, with miles of circuitous hiking and biking trails connecting throughout. There are charming boardwalks overlooking the wetlands, a pier for fishing, boat ramps, and an agricultural history center where visitors can learn about the farming techniques and old technology once used by Texas farmers. Camping is an option at Cedar Hill, so anticipate staying in your Mesquite camper rental on the shores of Joe Pool Lake.

Lake Tawakoni is a massive lake east of Dallas, farther out in the countryside than Cedar Hill State Park. The lake is surrounded by parks and recreation areas, but Lake Tawakoni State Park is an obvious place to bring your Mesquite RV rental to if you want to keep with the theme of lakefront camping. The park and lake are named for the Tawakoni indigenous people who call central Texas home. The sandy shores of Lake Tawakoni are great for sunbathing and swimming, and there is an amphitheater where concerts and events can be held at the park.

Still haven’t got enough of Texas lakes? Cooper Lake State Park is just over an hour's drive to the northeast of Mesquite on Jim Chapman Lake. The park offers camping under towering oak trees, so you can enjoy the park from the comfort of your Mesquite motorhome rental. Birdwatching, fishing, swimming, boating, waterskiing, and hiking are among the many activities possible at the fun little park.

If you are a fan of long-distance hikes through wide-open stretches of wilderness, Sam Houston National Forest is a safe bet. There are miles and miles of incredible hiking routes winding their way through the forest, but the 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Loop is known far and wide as one of the best scenic nature trails imaginable. There are three different campgrounds in the forest where you can park your Mesquite RV rental, as well as some archaeological sites dating back over 10,000 years.

RV Parks to Visit

When you book an RV in Mesquite, you might need to find a few places to camp during your vacation. Plantation Place RV Park is found on a 40-acre plantation estate, with decent amenities and pleasant scenery. The park is only a few miles from downtown Dallas, and it has spacious camping sites for even the largest RVs to maneuver into.

Terrell RV Park is a bit farther from the city, located off Interstate 20. This family-owned park is close to a shopping mall and lots of local shops and restaurants. Otherwise, one of the aforementioned state parks like Cedar Hill or Lake Tawakoni also offer spots to camp out.

City Sightseeing

You would be hard pressed to find a more exciting city to visit than Mesquite, especially when you take into consideration that Dallas and Fort Worth are right there too with hundreds of their own attractions. The Kenny Wallace Dirt Racing Experience is perhaps the most thrilling thing you can do in Mesquite, where you can race against your friends in decommissioned dirt racing vehicles. The track is set up and ready to go, and the cars are tuned up to give you an authentic racing experience like the professionals.

The Dallas Museum of Art is a worthwhile place to visit if you want to see an impressive collection comprised of art from all over the world. Contemporary artwork, antique photographs, and classical statues from ancient Greece are a few of the things you’ll find in this enchanting museum.

If you love animals or you are traveling with your family, the Dallas Zoo is a memorable experience that children especially seem to cherish. The zoo dates back to 1888 when only a few animals lived at the facility. Now the park holds thousands of animals including lions and tigers from Africa and Asia.

Don’t forget to check out the different rodeos when you rent an RV in Mesquite. It is, after all, the Rodeo Capital of Texas for a reason.
