Settled some time in the late 1860s or possibly the early 1870s, the town of Merit, Texas was originally named after a local judge. An "r" and a "t" were dropped from the name over the years. A post office was planted in Merit in 1884, and by the 1890s, the Santa Fe Railway had established Merit as a shipping area for many local farmers. RV rentals in Hunt County can offer travelers a wonderful launching point into the entire state of Texas or a bit farther north into Oklahoma. It sits to the northeast of Plano as well as Dallas and Fort Worth.

To the south is Davy Crockett National Forest near Lufkin. South of that sits Sam Houston National Forest, just outside of Houston. If you’re willing to take a bit of a drive in that Merit RV rental, you can head a bit farther north into Arkansas and visit Ouachita National Forest near Hot Springs. There’s also Ozark National Forest to the northeast of Fort Smith.

The Great Outdoors

Graham Park is located nearby in Greenville and is an excellent destination for those very purposes. It is well-maintained, and the grassy areas are plenty of fun. They have a pond and plenty of walking paths so the kids can play on the playground while the adults can take a leisurely stroll.

Another activity that might be a lot of fun for children on a hot day is Ja-Lu Community Park. It is a splash pad that offers adults and children alike an opportunity to quickly cool down and have some fun. It isn’t very big, but there are restrooms, a concrete walking path, picnic tables, and a covered shaded area to sit down and enjoy lunch. Of course, when you rent a motorhome in Merit, you can also eat inside and enjoy the comforts of the RV.

For hiking and bicycling, you can head over to McKinney and check out the Erwin Park Hike and Bike Trail. This is a wonderful and beautiful trail to visit that is very well maintained. It offers a challenge to people of all riding levels. You can feel as though you are miles and miles from any major city, even though it is right near the heart of McKinney. It’s a good destination when you have an RV rental near Merit.

RV Parks

It’s terrific to rent an RV in just about any region of the country, and when you’re in this part of Texas, you are going to have so many things to explore and enjoy you’ll want a good RV park to settle in for the night. Texas Star RV Ranch is located in Melissa, Texas and offers full hookup service. They have pull-through sites, and big rigs have access here too, so if you have a large Merit camper rental, there shouldn’t be a problem guiding it in here. There are concrete pads, and the sites are long enough for most of the longest RVs. Reservations may be recommended.

Also located in Melissa is Lighthouse RV Resort. It’s a larger park and offers full hookup service. They have several amenities, including a restroom, showers, and laundry facilities. They also have propane available if you need some. They offer pull-through sites, but these spots may be limited so be sure to call ahead if you have a longer motorhome rental in Merit and prefer that option.

Lakeland RV Ranch and Campground is located in Farmersville and offers full hookup service, and the gravel sites are relatively level. There are horses nearby, a dog park, and you’ll see plenty of ducks.

Exploring the City

There are lots of outdoor adventures to do and see, including the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney. This is a nature reserve as well as a garden that offers trails for hiking. There’s also a nature center that provides great information and some wonderful rich history about the area and the ecosystems here. There are some amazing animals on display including a butterfly house. With a travel trailer rental in Merit, this can be a good destination for individuals or families.

Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum is located nearby in Greenville. If you don’t know anything about cotton farming, ginning, or anything else related to this important industry, this can be a wonderful destination. You can cruise your motorhome rental from Merit over here and spend several hours enjoying the displays and information.

Of course, summer can be quite hot and humid in Texas which is why it’s a great idea to cool down every once in a while. Even with the best RV rental Merit has to offer, a nice water park usually sounds perfect, whether you have children or not. Splash Kingdom Water Park is located in Greenville, and there are plenty of water features to keep everyone in the crew cool for a day.
