Mercer Island, Washington is a city that encompasses an island of the same name, nestled in Lake Washington between Seattle and Bellevue. It’s connected to both major cities via Interstate 90, which runs over a series of bridges. The bridge between Seattle and Mercer Island is one of the longest floating bridges in the world! The island is just over 13 square miles and like much of the Seattle metropolitan area, is densely populated.

If you book an RV in Mercer Island, you will be able to enjoy a serene getaway just minutes from downtown Seattle. The island community has been lauded as one of the top 50 suburbs in the United States and offers over 475 acres of parks and public spaces.

Discover Mercer Island

The Great Outdoors

With Lake Washington surrounding the entire island, it offers endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. There are several waterfront parks and public beaches where you can swim, boat, and fish, plus a public boat launch. Thanks to a series of man-made shipping canals, Lake Washington connects to the smaller Lake Union and eventually to Puget Sound. There are rental facilities all along the shores of these bodies of water offering such activities as hot tub boat rentals, waterskiing, and paddleboarding. You can also book romantic dinner and sunset cruises on the lakes, and see all the unique houseboats moored in the area.

There are a multitude of parks to explore with your RV rental in Mercer Island, with more than 50 miles of marked walkways and trails. Luther Burbank Park is one of the largest and most popular parks, located on the northeast end on the island. The park features a state-of-the-art playground (with a zipline!), an off-leash dog area, and a public dock and fishing pier. Lifeguards are on duty at the swimming beach during the summer, and the tennis courts are open year round. The undeveloped areas of the park are home to a wide variety of wildlife, including tree frogs, beavers, and nearly 200 species of birds and waterfowl.

For hiking opportunities ranging from an easy walk in the woods to intense switchbacks up a mountain, head to the nearby foothills of the Cascade Mountains, where you will find Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park, Squak Mountain State Park, and Tiger Mountain State Forest, all quite close to each other. If you are feeling up to a challenge, hike up to the humorously named Poo Poo Point for stunning views of the Puget Sound area. Paragliders frequently launch from this point, so you may be treated to an air show as well.

RV Parks

Due to the small size and dense population, there are limited opportunities for camping with your travel trailer rental in Mercer Island. However, there are multiple RV parks just to the east, including Trailer Inns RV Park of Bellevue. They offer full hookups, laundry facilities, and an indoor pool area with a sauna and hot tub.

Being so near to a major metropolitan area, you will find a plethora of gas stations and all kinds of grocery stores. Some Walmarts in the area may allow you stay overnight in their parking lot with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

The Seattle area is a vibrant cultural hub of the Pacific Northwest, and as such there is a multitude of ways to explore the city. However, one of most famous and classic Seattle summer events is Seafair. Started in 1950, the annual event lasts for ten weeks and includes events like parades, street fairs, and of course involves the famous Seafair Pirates. Seafair culminates in a weekend extravaganza featuring hydroplane racing on Lake Washington and an air show including an appearance by the Blue Angels. Seattle traffic is never great, but it gets particularly snarled during Seafair events, so if you rent a motorhome in Mercer Island, you will already be in the perfect place to view the air and water shows!

For animal lovers, the Woodland Park Zoo is a must-see. Its 92 acres are split into bioclimatic zones so you can check out a variety of different natural habitats, from tropical rainforest to coastal deserts and everything in between. As a Humane Certified zoo, Woodland Park’s mission is to save species that are on the brink of extinction, which means that you can see healthy and thriving members of species that you may otherwise not ever see in your lifetime. Even when you rent an RV, there’s no need to stress about parking because the zoo offers paid designated RV parking.

If you're looking for a view, visit the world-famous Space Needle. At 520 feet tall, it offers unbeatable and spectacular 360-degree views of the city and Puget Sound. It is also home to the world’s first rotating glass floor, which allows amazing view of the structure of the Needle and the city directly below. You can also sample quintessential Pacific Northwest food and drinks at the top of the Needle, while you slowly revolve. Unfortunately, you may need to leave your RV trailer rental in Mercer Island, as parking is even more limited in downtown Seattle. Buses, ridesharing apps, and other methods of public transportation make it easy to get around the city.
