Menlo is a modern version of a one-horse town. It was originally named Menlo Park in 1893 after California’s Menlo Park. Its sign was accidentally cut in half, and thereafter, the city became known as Menlo, Washington. This town is best known for an unusual burial: an 1855 pioneer, Willie Keil, made his way toward the Pacific coast with his family and a group of religious settlers. En route from Missouri, Willie took ill with malaria and passed. His family, determined to get him to their destination, put him in a lead-lined coffin and filled it with 100-proof whiskey. Some 2,000 miles later, “Pickled Pioneer” Willie was buried in Menlo.

The closest town is Raymond, about seven miles to the northwest. Chehalis, a larger town just off Interstate 5, is 45 miles due east. Tacoma, a town south of Seattle, is 100 miles to the northeast. Larger cities, such as Portland and Seattle are around 125 miles to the southeast and northeast, respectively.

Discover Menlo

The Great Outdoors

When you book an RV in Menlo, you will have access to thousands of acres of wild forests; however, much of it is privately owned. Do not let this deter you for there is plenty of public lands for you to explore during your RV adventure. Your luxury RV rental from Menlo, Washington, will also give you the opportunity to head outside of the city.

Willapa Wetlands (aka Potter’s Slough) is an undeveloped park located a few miles west of Raymond that is overseen by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. It’s a popular saltwater marsh for fishermen and clammers, waterfowl hunters, and bird-watchers. Eagles, wading birds, and ducks are often spotted here. Deer and elks often venture across this region, as well. Take note that while RV parking is permitted here, the parking areas are underdeveloped.

Due to the southwestern part of the state being heavily logged, only a few regions still have old-growth trees that are easily accessible for hiking and photography. Rainbow Falls State Park is one of those locations that still provides miles of mixed-use trails winding through groves of trees that date back to before the pioneer days, and a small waterfall. Don't forget to bring your camera to capture the moment!

The nearby Willapa Hills State Park Trail runs from Chehalis to South Bend, just a few miles short of the ocean. The 22 miles out of 56 miles of trail are developed for biking and horseback riding, and cycling as well. The remaining 30-odd miles are unimproved and may be unsuitable for bicycles and some horses.

Willapa Harbor, which is a complex estuary, offers a number of water activities, including fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, and clamming. For the avid hunter, Waterfowl hunting is permitted in certain areas.

A little farther out, the Long Beach Peninsula’s beaches are legal highways -- as long as the sand is hard-packed -- and visitors can drive on the beaches. How cool is that! Note: 4-wheel drive vehicles are strongly encouraged. Want to enjoy the water all year, rent a wetsuit and go surfing! For all you kite lovers, Long Beach lays claim to being home to the world’s largest Kite Festival, which occurs annually.
