In the north-central section of Florida lies the old fashioned town of Mayo. It is named after the Confederate colonel, James Micajah Mayo, however, the town temporarily changed its name to Miracle Whip in 2018. Gotta love a town with a sense of humor.

Mayo's main attraction is its close proximity to the multitude of freshwater springs and rivers in the area. When you book an RV in Lafayette County, you have access to some of the most unique paddling spots in the country.

In addition, Mayo is located almost directly between Tallahasee, and Gainesville. Both cities offer an excellent selection of restaurants and craft breweries if you're looking for a night on the town.

The Great Outdoors

Florida freshwater springs are located all throughout the northern part of the state. They consist of a large network of aquifer fed waterways home to manatees, a variety of birds, turtles and even alligators. Because this spring water comes up from the limestone aquifer beneath the ground, it emerges crystal clear and at a consistent temperature in the seventies all year long. Enjoy these freshwater springs with your RV rental as you go swimming, kayaking and cave diving.

Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park is a must see with its stunning turquoise water and award-winning trails. There are nearly 33,000 feet of documented underwater cave passages and a unique nature trail that traces the path of the cave system that exists beneath the ground. For experienced cave divers with the proper certification, this is a premier destination.

Paddlers may want to take trip down the Suwannee River that extends from Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico. The legendary Suwannee River was made famous in the 1850's by Stephen C. Foster when he wrote "The Swanee River (Old Folks At Home)" which is now the Florida state song. This black water river gets it's dark tannin color from the Okefenokee swamp vegetation further upstream. As you glide down this pristine river, you are flanked on both sides by majestic trees laden with Spanish moss and bald cypress with "knees" that rise up from the banks like towers.

Bring along a fishing pole for an opportunity to catch largemouth bass, Suwannee bass, mullet, bream or channel catfish. Enjoy dinner in your Mayo camper rental.

Lafayette Blue Springs State Park is another nearby attraction that is a laid back spot for swimming and picnics. Also located off the Suwannee River, this park features a limestone bridge that crosses the spring giving you a great view of the crystal water.

RV Parks

There are a number of RV parks to park your Mayo camper rental for the night as you head east on highway 27. For fun events and live music, check out Ellie Ray's RV Resort. This unique RV campground sits right on the Sante Fe River and has a hopping lounge area with periodic music events. Let the day melt away as you relax in the on-site pool or jacuzzi. If you don't have your own canoe or kayak, boat rentals are available. There is easy access to the Santa Fe & Ichetucknee Rivers from the boat dock.

Camping is also available near the Ichetucknee State Park at Ichetucknee Family Canoe and Cabins. This is a family run campground that offers full RV hookups and beautiful wooded sites. Inflatable tubes, kayaks, and canoes are available to rent for your adventure down the crystalline Ichetucknee River. Blue Hole is the head spring which feeds the river and is also located at the park. An impressive sixty-seven million gallons of water flow out of this first magnitude spring in a single day.

Suwannee River Rendezvous Resort & Campground is another spot to check out. This resort style RV park is a great option for your luxury Mayo motorhome rental, with a wide variety of RV campsites offering either 30 amp or 50 amp hookups. This is the home of Convict Springs which is on the park grounds and is open to swimming along with the Rendevous pool and hot tub.
