The Great Outdoors

First, you can drive the best RV rental from Marengo west to one of Central Iowa’s most scenic state parks. With a 600-acre lake and 15 miles of beautiful shoreline, Rock Creek State Park near Grinnell is a hotspot for boating and swimming. Any sized motorboat is permitted on the lake, or you can rent a kayak, canoe, or peddle-boat to explore the tranquil waters. On dry land, there are picnic areas and camping facilities, or you can explore the woodlands using the parks multi-use trails. At dawn and dusk, Rock Creek is an excellent place to spot wildlife. The area is home to a variety of birdlife including large concentrations of migrating ducks.

Next, you can turn your vehicle eastward and make a visit to Lake Macbride State Park in Johnson County. This lush park is set between forested hills and creeks, providing access to Coralville Lake, the Iowa River, and Lake Macbride. Naturally, paddle sports are very popular, and there are canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards, as well as peddle boats, available for rent from the pontoon. The park also offers boat ramps, a designated swimming beach, and picnic areas. The surrounding slopes are threaded with hiking and cycling trails, and the forest is speckled with songbirds. In the spring and fall, you may even see osprey and shorebirds. During the winter months, these same trails are ideal for cross-country skiing.

Continue driving northeast, and you’ll soon come to Palisades-Kepler State Park, located on the Cedar River, a few miles from Mount Vernon. Although small, this hidden state park is home to an abundance of wildflowers, hardwood forests, and impressive river bluffs. The park is peppered with ravines, and some of the best viewpoints can be reached using the six-mile trail network. On your hike, you may also spot fossils dating back to prehistoric times and Indian mounds from the more recent past.
