Originally known as Klickitat Landing and named for the local Klickitat native people, Lyle, Washington is a tiny community on the northern banks of the Columbia River. The town was established back in 1859 after being purchased by James O. Lyle, the town's namesake. Before the Spokane, Portland, and Seattle Railway came to town in 1907, steamboats were the primary source for transporting people, mail, and goods to and from the semi-isolated town.

Lyle is still a peaceful retreat to this day, nestled in the hills of the Columbia River Gorge overlooking the river. Just an hour's drive from Portland and Vancouver, Lyle is accessible when you want it to be, with an isolated and peaceful atmosphere well-suited for a Lyle camper rental vacation. When you book an RV in Lyle, it almost goes without saying that any of the hundreds of riverside recreation areas, state parks, conservation areas, and forests are incredible places to spend your vacation, and there is no shortage of these places near town. The town has a small stable of locally owned businesses and an impressive list of boutique wineries in honor of the region’s thriving wine industry.

The Great Outdoors

People who rent an RV in Lyle usually do so to have easy access to the myriad of local nature parks and incredible scenery. Lyle is an outdoors paradise. Right down the road from Lyle is Doug’s Beach State Park, a mecca for kiteboarding and windsurfing. The park is named for Doug Campbell, a professional windsurfer who helped bring notoriety to the sport. The epic wind on the wide-open Columbia River makes for excellent windsurfing, coupled with incredible views of the water. Mayer State Park is directly across the river from Lyle and has similarly grand views of the water that can be seen from high atop the rocky bluffs that line the river gorge. There are a few boat ramps and lots of nature trails carving through the park, as well as miles of abandoned highway that was once a planned addition to Interstate 84. Fishing, swimming, and picnicking are also activities you can partake in when you bring your Lyle RV rental to the small Oregon park.

Memaloose State Park is a scenic oasis also located on the river, and practically adjacent to Mayer State Park. Once an indigenous burial site for funeral pyres on the river, this beautiful and sacred ground has towering maple, cottonwood, and willow trees that provide shady relief from the hot sun. There is a large amphitheater located on site, as well as a playground, restroom facilities, and a campground perfect for you and your Lyle motorhome rental. The open meadows and lack of light pollution make the park a great place for stargazing at night, particularly on days where the moon is not visible.

Mount Hood National Forest is situated on the other side of the Columbia River in Oregon, just a few hours’ drive away when you rent an RV in Lyle. This massively popular forest can compete with the biggest national parks when it comes to annual visitors, with Mount Hood National Forest bringing in nearly five million people each year. The forest contains Oregon’s highest point, Mount Hood, a feature that shares a name with the entire entity. This hulking stratovolcano dominates the skyline for miles around it, an imposing yet stoic manifestation of ethereal beauty in every sense. There are several wilderness areas, lakes, recreation areas, and campgrounds found within the beloved forest, so don’t hesitate; when you have a camper rental near Lyle, head for this incredible forest as soon as you can.

RV Parks
