Centrally located between Pascagoula, Mobile, and Hattiesburg, Lucedale is a small city and the county seat of George County. It was established in 1901 and named after its founder, Gregory N. Luce, who operated his successful lumber business from the town.

Lucedale’s setting on the edge of the De Soto National Forest and its proximity to the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge makes it a great place to rent an RV while exploring southern Mississippi. It’s well-served by family and pet-friendly campgrounds, with a central park that’s a hub for sporting activities and live entertainment.

Discover Lucedale

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Lucedale and head to the De Soto National Forest, which sprawls across more than 500,000 acres to the west of the city. It protects a significant tract of longleaf pine savanna and pine flatwoods that support rare orchids, gopher frogs, and gopher tortoises. It’s a popular birdwatching and fishing destination, as well as being home to more than 60 miles of hiking trails that include the Black Creek Trail and Tuxachanie Trail.

Within the De Soto National Forest is the Black Creek Wilderness, which is the largest designated wilderness area in Mississippi and the only National Wild and Scenic River in the state. It centers around the caramel-colored Black Creek whose deep hue is created by the tannic acid of decaying vegetation. Explore the ecologically rich floodplain that includes oxbow lakes and stands of sweet gum, red maple, and bald cypress as the Black Creek makes its way towards the Pascagoula River.

A 45-minute drive south of Lucedale is the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses one of the last remaining wet pine savanna habitats in the United States. It protects vital habitat for the endangered Mississippi sandhill crane, as well as a variety of migratory songbirds and waterfowl. It’s also rich in plant species, with rare orchids and carnivorous plants among the weird and wonderful things that grow in the waterlogged and acidic clay soils.

RV Parks

Book a travel trailer rental in Lucedale, MS and make the 10-minute drive south to the Anchor S RV Park. There are a number of spacious sites to select from, as well as basic amenities such as toilets and showers.

Another nearby option is the Deerfield Mobile Home & RV Park, which is a farther five minutes’ drive south. There are full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service available, and the park is both big rig and pet-friendly.

Alternatively, make the 30-minute drive northeast to the Citronelle Lakeview RV Park in neighboring Alabama. It’s also pet-friendly and has full hookups, with easy-to-access pull-through sites overlooking the waters of Citronelle Lake.

There is also a Walmart in Lucedale where you may be able to set up camp with the motorhome rental for a night or two. It's best to call ahead to confirm availability with store management.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Lucedale, Mississippi and head to the Lucedale City Park, which serves as a recreation hub for the local community. There’s a children’s playground, tennis and basketball courts, as well as a scenic walking track, together with numerous pavilions where you can relax with a picnic. The park is also home to a 300-seat amphitheater where live music concerts and Shakespearean plays are held during the warmer months.

Make the short drive north from Lucedale to the Palestine Gardens, a miniature replica of the Holy Land that was established in 1960. It’s built on a one-yard-to-one-mile scale and features intricate recreations of places such as the Dead Sea and the historic towns of Bethlehem and Jerusalem. The replica is nestled amidst landscaped gardens of azaleas, camellias, and bamboo, with guided tours offering both "Old Testament" and "New Testament" narratives.

Lucedale makes a good base for visiting Mobile on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, which is home to the mid-19th-century Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception that’s renowned for its German-designed stained glass windows. Get your cultural fix at the Mobile Museum of Art or admire the elaborate floats and costumes on display at the Mobile Carnival Museum. This lively port city is also where the WWII-era USS Alabama battleship is anchored, with this National Historic Landmark now accessible to the public on guided tours.

Lucedale is home to a couple of supermarkets where you can pick up groceries, as well as a handful of fast food restaurants and eateries for dining out. There are also gas stations if you need to fill up your campervan rental in Lucedale.

Whether you’re visiting George County for its wildlife refuges or proximity to Mobile, book an RV in Lucedale and start planning your next adventure.
