Loyalton is the largest town and only incorporated city in Sierra County, California. It sits along the famous state highway 49, which goes through all of California’s magnificent gold country, and is located within 40 miles northwest of Reno, NV, and two major interstate highways—highway 80 and highway 395.

Originally known as Smith’s Neck, Loyalton earned its current name in 1863, a nod to the sentiment of loyalty to the Union Cause during the Civil War. When Loyalton was incorporated in 1901, it was California’s second largest city after Los Angeles. Book an RV in Loyalton if you’ve ever been interested in exploring a quiet tranquil town, and Sierra Valley’s spectacular natural and cultural attractions.

The Great Outdoors

When you rent a travel trailer rental in Loyalton, it's the perfect start to an adventure through beautiful sub-alpine Sierry Valley landscape, which ranges from dry woodland, conifer and aspen forests to valleys, meadows, and ranches covered with streams, crops, pastures, and wildflowers. You’ll come across many spots (like the overlook on Highway 49 east of Yuba Pass) providing magnificent panoramic views of the valley and the Sierra Nevada mountains that surround Loyalton.

Numerous trails in the Sierra Valley area range from casual strolls to rigorous climbs, with many shared by mountain bikers, day hikers, backpackers, and equestrians. The Cottonwood Creek Botanical Trail is an easy path with trail markers and a corresponding brochure available to help you identify the local trees and plants. Avid hikers can climb the steep Badenaugh Trail up to the Babbit Peak Lookout for sweeping views of eastern California and western Nevada, or access the epic Pacific Crest Trail from the Jackson Meadow trail-head.

The pristine Lakes Basin Area is just outside of Loyalton and, along with local rivers and streams, offers fantastic opportunities for rafting, boating, fishing, and swimming. Jackson Meadows Reservoir is popular for all kinds of aquatic play or cast a line in the remote setting of Independence Lake. During an RV rental vacation in Loyalton, there’s also plenty of winter fun to be had on backwoods and groomed trails enjoyed by skiers, snowmobilers, and snowshoers winding around valleys, hills, and alpine lakes. The Little Truckee Summit area located between Sierraville and Truckee provides the Treasure Mountain Loop and other trails leading up to the Gold Lakes Recreation Area, and several of Tahoe's world famous ski resorts are just 50 miles away from Loyalton.

This part of Northern CA also has an abundance of wildlife. Sierra Valley is a recognized IBA (Important Birding Area) by the Audubon Society. So at certain times of the year, you might catch sight of over 100 species in a day. Try to spot a bald eagle in the wooded areas, deer and other creatures share the pastures with cattle, and another special feature to keep an eye out for is a cattle drive.

RV Parks

When you choose a motorhome rental from Loyalton, you’ll find a range of suitable places to park your RV for the night. Head along Yuba Pass to Truckee along Highways 49 and 89 to come across campgrounds set near the water and nestled in forests and meadows. If you’re willing to forgo many amenities in favor of a more rustic but scenic locale, one option to consider is Bear Valley Campground. This small, secluded campground offers the basics including picnic tables, toilets, and drinking water, and you won’t want to miss the exhilarating 18 miles of beauty on the Bear Valley Loop OHV Trail.

If RV parks are your thing, there are plenty to choose from throughout this region. In historic Sierra City, you have the option of staying at Sierra Skies RV Park for your next camping destination. Every site here has full hookups with electricity, water, and septic. The RV park also has endless amenities and activities available on the premises and nearby to make your stay comfy and enjoyable, including a convenience store, laundry, and private access to the North Yuba River and beach area.

Exploring the City

Loyalton may be small, but as the largest town in Sierra County, there is plenty of culture to experience here. After you rent an RV by owner in Loyalton, you’ll come across numerous historic sites throughout Sierra Valley, including barns and farmhouses dating back to the 19th century, many of which are still being used today.

Cruise over to the city park to visit The Loyalton Museum, a historic building featuring displays on agriculture, logging, the Washoe Indians, and fraternal organizations like the Rebekah Lodge. The museum also has outdoor exhibits to wander around, including a donkey engine, logging wagons, and farm equipment. Another historic site you might want to check out when you rent an RV here is the brick building by the gas station in Loyalton. Built around the turn of the 20th century, this building and the old grocery store in nearby Sierraville are two of the few remaining buildings constructed of Sierra Valley brick.

This is the perfect region to try your hand at gold panning or stop for an impromptu picnic at the wheelchair accessible Donner Camp Picnic Site, located along Highway 89 and facing a meadow where members of the historic Donner Party camped during the winter of 1846. After a day of sightseeing in your Loyalton camper, rental you might be ready for a soak in the natural spring waters at neighboring Sierraville’s Sierra Hot Springs Resort and Retreat Center, located on land that Native Americans have long seen as a sacred and healing area. Whether you’re in the mood to relax or explore, there is plenty to discover when you’re passing through this stunning California region.
