Lopez Island is a small village that shares its name with the island it is found on. The island and town are named for Gonzalo López de Haro, a Spanish military officer thought to be the first European to reach the San Juan Islands. The local population sits at a few thousand permanent residents, but during summer times those numbers swell due to the island’s popularity as a vacation spot. Like any place in Washington state, this island is home to some pretty spectacular scenery, making it an ideal place to rent an RV.

Despite being an island, and the third largest island in the San Juan Archipelago, you can bring your Lopez Island RV rental to and from the island by way of the ferry that launches from Anacortes on the mainland. Lopez Island is full of quaint bed and breakfasts, coastal cottages, and a handful of excellent parks to give both locals and tourists ways to get the most out of their Lopez Island experience. When you book an RV in Lopez Island, you have the option of spending your entire trip on the island or taking the ferry to the mainland for an extended road trip. There is no wrong answer and the Evergreen State will surely impress you.

Discover Lopez Island

The Great Outdoors

The San Juan Islands are full of enchanting parks, forests, and beaches just waiting to be discovered. Lopez Island itself has dedicated bicycle lanes throughout the entire island, connecting its many parks to one another. As soon as you get off the boat, you’ll pass by Odlin County Park on the main road heading towards town. Eighty acres of waterfront and 30 campsites are an open invitation for you to visit the park in your Lopez Island camper rental. Hiking along the seashore, swimming in the water, or fishing for dinner are fun ways to make the most of your stay. Iceberg Point is located at the southernmost tip of the island and can be a little tricky to find when you search for it in your Lopez Island RV rental. The reserve has excellent hikes on rocky seashores and you can even see Canada and the Olympic Mountains on clear days.

Spencer Spit State Park is the only state park on Lopez Island, although there is a myriad of state parks in the San Juan Islands. The park has lots of hiking trails, tranquil beaches, and a salty lagoon near the shore. Swimming and beachcombing can be fun ways to enjoy the beach, and camping is part of the fun when you rent an RV and bring it to Spencer Spit State Park. The Cascadia Marine Trail, a 250-mile boating trail in the Puget Sound uses the park as one of its many camping spots if you are into that sort of thing.

Remember those Olympic Mountains you might be able to see from Iceberg Point? They reside in Olympic National Park all the way on the other side of the Puget Sound. You can either drive your Lopez Island RV rental through Seattle and Olympia all the way around to the national park or take a ferry from nearby Whidbey Island to utilize a helpful shortcut. This stunning park brings in millions of visitors each year to see its glorious rainforests, rocky shores, and epic mountains that overlook the entire Puget Sound. There are more than enough places to camp and trails to hike at this stunning eco-sanctuary that is home to countless species of wildlife.

RV Friendly

As far as camping on the island goes, there are a few places you can park your Lopez Island camper rental overnight. Odlin County Park and Spencer Spit State Park are your best bets on the island and have lovely waterfront camping available.

Lopez Islander Resort is an upscale destination with a hotel and camping options. The resort has a pool, a banquet hall, a bar & grill, a marina, and much more. Pioneer Trails RV Park is a park off the island by Anacortes, the town where the ferry is based. This campground has amazing views of Deception Pass Bridge and the water.

City Attractions

Lopez Island has a smaller population and cannot be considered a lively, bustling town. However, there are naturally some interesting things to do while you visit because it is a tourist haven in the summer. Shark Reef Sanctuary might technically fall under an outdoor attraction, but it is an amazing place to stare at the water and watch wildlife interact. Sharks, seals, whales, birds, and every kind of ocean animal you can think of might make an appearance at the sanctuary. Lopez Island Vineyard is one of the oldest in the region, and an awesome place to sample locally made wine.

You can also hop on a whale watching tour and take a cruise of the Puget Sound. Unbelievable up-close sightings of different types of whales are a fantastic way to remember your vacation. Lopez Island Historical Museum is run by the Lopez Island Historical Society, which protects lots of historic homes for the preservation of the town’s culture. Lots of exhibits displaying information about wildlife, indigenous people, and the first settlers are on display at this fascinating little museum.
