First settled in the 1850s, Lone Oak, Texas was named after a lonely but impressive oak tree that rose above the grass-covered prairie. By the start of the Civil War, a community had established itself and a post office was built in 1869, followed 12 years later by the tracks of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad.

Lone Oak slowly grew as a shipping point for area farmers, with a steam gristmill and a cotton gin in operation by the early 20th century. But the Great Depression and World War II saw the population decline and it remains a somewhat sleepy and charming town today. It’s an inspiring destination to rent an RV if you want a true Texan small-town experience while being within easy access of fish-filled lakes and all the hustle and bustle of nearby Greenville.

Discover Lone Oak

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Lone Oak and drive south to Wind Point Park, which nestles on the northern shores of Lake Tawakoni. You can explore one of the walking or cycling paths that ring the lake or just take a dip from the sandy beach. There’s also a children’s playground and plenty of picnic facilities, as well as a 300-foot fishing pier where anglers can try their luck.

Near Wills Point, at the southern end of the lake is the Lake Tawakoni State Park, which extends across five miles of shoreline. It’s a popular recreational area for swimming and boating, as well as cycling and walking along the trails that wind through prairie and woodlands. Ranger programs are held here throughout the year and you can fish from the shore to catch white bass, striped and hybrid striped bass, or use the four-lane boat ramp to get out on the water.

Another popular local fishing destination is the Lake Fork Reservoir, which was created following the building of the Lake Fork Dam in 1980. It’s one of Texas’ premier trophy bass fishing lakes and holds the record for some of the biggest largemouth bass ever caught. It’s also well stocked with catfish, black and white crappie, and sunfish, with spring, fall, and winter considered the best time for luring big bass.
