Marshall County, named after United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall, is home to Lewisburg. The name Lewisburg was chosen to commemorate the work of Meriwether Lewis, the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which explored the Louisiana Territory soon after it was purchased.
