Situated between Nolin Lake and Rough River Lake, Leitchfield is a small city and the seat of Grayson County. It was named after an aide to George Washington, Major David Leitch, and settled in the early 19th century before being officially incorporated as a city in 1866.

Leitchfield’s proximity to numerous fishing lakes makes it a popular place for anglers to rent an RV while exploring Kentucky. There’s a good choice of family-friendly campgrounds on the city’s doorstep while being an easy day trip from the bright lights and bustle of Louisville.

Discover Leitchfield

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Leitchfield and make the short drive south to Nolin Lake, which is one of the top fishing destinations in Kentucky. It’s renowned for catfish, bass, crappie, and walleye fishing, with plenty of boat ramps where you can get out on the water, as well as scenic canoeing and kayaking. If you prefer to stay on dry land, several hiking trails wind along the shoreline, including the Shady Creek Trail that accesses the wildflower-filled landscapes of the Moutardier Recreation Area.

Just to the south of Nolin Lake is the Mammoth Cave National Park, which encompasses parts of what is the longest cave system known in the world. It’s been designated by UNESCO as both a World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve, with more than 400 miles of passageways currently surveyed. Join a guided tour to explore some of the most impressive features of the cave, including the “Frozen Niagara” and “Fat Man’s Misery,” or venture into some of the less developed parts of the cave on an adventurous spelunking tour.

Leitchfield can also be used as a base for exploring the Hoosier National Forest, which lies just across the border in Indiana. There are more than 250 miles of trails to explore on foot, by mountain bike, or while horseback riding, including the well-known Hemlock Cliffs Trail that accesses a series of seasonal waterfalls and impressive sandstone cliffs. Visit the heritage-listed Potts Creek Rockshelter Archeological Site where Paleo-Indians used to camp or join a guided tour of the Greek Revival-style Jacob Rickenbaugh House.

RV Parks

Pick up your campervan rental in Leitchfield and make the 20-minute drive south to the Moutardier Campground, which is situated in the Moutardier Recreation Area. There are 167 sites to select from, including 81 with electric and water hookups, together with a boat ramp and a children’s playground.

Also on the shores of Nolin Lake is the Wax Campground, which features 110 campsites offering electric hookups. Most have waterfront views and easy access to the beaches, with a children’s playground, picnic tables, and a fishing pier among the amenities.

Or, drive north to the Laurel Branch Campground, which overlooks the shores of Rough River Lake. There are 71 campsites to select from, some of which have electric hookups, as well as a boat ramp, a children’s playground, and a fish cleaning station for anglers to utilize.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Leitchfield and explore on foot, stopping to relax in the leafy green spaces that dot the city. Stroll along the lakefront trails of James. D. Beville Park or let the kids run loose on the play equipment of B. G. Dewitt Park. If you’re visiting during the summer months, you can cool off at the splash pad of the Firefighter's Memorial Park or hit the slides and pools of the Leitchfield Aquatic Center.

While exploring the town, make a point of admiring the Jack Thomas House, an 1810 residence that is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s the oldest known brick house in Leitchfield and served as the home of county clerk Jack Thomas, followed by his son, Edwin. It’s now occupied by the Grayson County Historical Society, which operates a small museum and research library where you can discover your links to Leitchfield.

Leitchfield makes a good base for visiting Kentucky’s largest city, Louisville, which lies just over an hour’s drive to the northeast. Coincide your visit with the annual Kentucky Derby or delve into the history of this long-established horse race at the Kentucky Derby Museum. If you’re a fan of baseball, then the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory on Kentucky’s “Museum Row” is a must-see, with a range of engaging exhibits that detail the story of Louisville Slugger baseball bats.

Leitchfield has a couple of well-stocked grocery stores where you can pick up supplies, as well as plenty of fast food restaurants and eateries for dining out. There are also several gas stations if you need to fill up your motorhome rental in Leitchfield.

Whether you’re visiting Grayson County for its fishing lakes or proximity to Louisville, book an RV in Leitchfield and head out for your next adventure.
