Leakey is the county seat of Real County, Texas. The area surrounding the city was first settled by Anglo-Americans in 1856; from 1883 to 1891, it was the county seat of the newly created Edwards County, after which the county seat was moved to Rocksprings. Leakey was incorporated in 1951, and early on, the community relied on cotton and corn cultivation, lumber, and ranching to support its economy; today the city relies on tourism and deer hunting.

Book an RV in Real County, and you are one step closer to an authentic vacation experience in the historical state of Texas. While you are here, take some time to visit a few other nearby communities. Kerrville is best known for the Guadalupe River that flows through it and the parks lining the river; it hosts a number of fairs, festivals, and summer camps. Hondo had a sign at its city limits, starting in the 1930s, that read “This is God's Country, Don't Drive Through It Like Hell;” citizens complained, and the sign was altered to read “This is God's Country, Please Don't Drive Through It Like Hell.” The sign has been featured in the news and magazines such as National Geographic. Del Rio has been a filming location for numerous movies and TV shows, including No Country For Old Men. Your Leakey travel trailer rental is your invitation to visit Leakey and Real County.

The Great Outdoors

Lost Maples State Natural Area is a popular destination due to its scenic beauty, especially in the fall. The park has steep and rugged limestone canyons, plateau grasslands, wooded slopes, and more. It is an ideal location for bird and wildlife watching, camping, and geocaching. Hikers have miles of trails to choose from and can follow one trail along the top of an immense cliff. Hikers should stay on the designated trails as Uvalde maple trees have shallow roots that can be damaged by foot traffic.

Garner State Park was purchased from a German family who opened part of their land to the public for camping. The local citizens who bought it in 1935 enlisted the Civilian Conservation Corps to develop it, and the park was opened to the public in 1941. A combination building and dance pavilion were built from local limestone and bald cypress sources. The dance pavilion is used in the summer to host dances; visitors can join in or rent canoes, kayaks, and tubes, or go swimming in the Frio River. There are miles of trails for hiking or guests can go geocaching, play miniature golf or go bike riding. There are cabins for rent and campgrounds for those who wish to stay overnight.

Kickapoo Cavern State Park is a rustic recreational area where the adventurous can observe Mexican free-tailed bats exiting their caves at dusk. The caves are the most popular attraction, but entry into the caves is by guided tour only (to protect the caves and their residents); there are more than a dozen known caves. Birders can observe approximately 240 bird species from an on-site bird blind; hikers and bikers can enjoy miles of trails. Camping is allowed. Park your Leakey camper rental nearby, and enjoy a hot meal under an open sky before the bats take flight.

RV Parks

Frio River RV Park is located on the Clearwater Ranch near the Frio River and is open for RV camping year-round. There are numerous activities nearby that guests can enjoy, such as hiking a nearby mountain and enjoying the views. Individual sites have back-in or pull-through access, electrical hookups, water taps, picnic tables, and fire rings. Sites have level hard stand pads, and there is a pavilion and barbecue pit that guests can use.

Exploring The City

Those with young children should consider making their first stop at a local horse stable that accommodates rides through their open field. The stable also has a petting zoo where the owner has rescued some injured and at-risk animals such as a blind axis deer. The zoo has rabbits, billy goats, and more. A local outfitter rents tubes and kayaks for visitors to take out on the Frio River and has river shuttle cruises for large and small groups. A local deli has supplies for those who wish to cook their own meals, plus gifts, unique furnishings (antique display cases and wall art made from the front ends of classic cars), and there is a sister bar and grill behind the store. Be sure to take your Leakey motorhome rental for a cruise on the highways; it is one of the best things about an RV vacation (you'll understand once you've done it).

Almost all of the restaurants in Leakey are locally owned and operated. One local cafe is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and serves the traditional varieties of comfort food. Guests can opt between the menu or buffet; the menu is extensive and includes a few vegetarian dishes. Portions are large, and takeout is available; take your meal home to the Leakey luxury RV rental to enjoy under an open Texas sky.
