Lakewood, California, is one of many post-World War II planned communities that were developed and built for GI's returning home from the war. Sometimes referred to as “an instant city”, Lakewood went from being lima bean fields in 1950 to a complete city in 1960. War veterans could get mortgages with no down payment with extremely affordable payments, and the homes went quickly. Purchases averaged 30 per day, and by the end of April 1950, more than 1,000 homes had been sold.

Lakewood is part of Los Angeles County, along with Long Beach, Artesia, La Palma, Norwalk, Montebello and a long list of additional towns and cities. The county, which also includes Los Angeles city, is the most populous county in the U.S., has a population larger than 41 individual U.S. States and is the third largest metropolitan economy in the world (larger than the GDPs of Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Belgium and Norway combined). Fifteen percent of Los Angeles County (693 square miles) is water; the county is, therefore, home to numerous lakes and reservoirs. It has 70 miles of coastline on the Pacific Ocean, in addition to mountains (the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountain ranges), forests, rivers, valleys and deserts, making it one of the most diverse outdoor destinations in the world.

Public transportation for Lakewood and LA County, in general, is handled by Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority; the authority's services include light rail (Norwalk to Redondo Beach and Long Beach to downtown LA) and a metro bus system.

Private transportation begins with your Lakewood luxury rental RV; once you have chosen a model and relocated it to an RV site of your choice, you can also use taxis or private rental cars to move about. Renting a car will provide you with more freedom of movement, and most rental companies have customer counters at Los Angeles International Airport; car rental offices closer in will send a car to bring you to their office if you call them. Los Angeles and Los Angeles County both tend to be spread out, and traffic can be a challenge, so parking your Lakewood, CA rental RV and taking taxis or your rental car could be a wise move.

Discover Lakewood

The Great Outdoors

Los Angeles County is home to some magnificent mountain ranges but these are quite far from Lakewood; however, take your Lakewood rental camper for a spin and you can overnight at the foot of these peaks.

Sequoia National Park & Sequoia National Forest are just north of Bakersfield, approximately three hours from Lakewood. Slightly to the east, you will find Death Valley National Park. Both of these destinations offer world-class hiking to suit anyone's taste and boast plenty of panoramic views. Slightly closer to home and directly north of Lakewood is the San Gabriel Mountain Range, where you will find Mt. San Antonio and Mt. Baldy. Angeles National Forest encompasses these mountains, offering trails for hikers, horses & off-road vehicles, as well as camping. The Santa Monica Mountain Range is to the west, encompassed by Los Padres National Forest, where you can park your Lakewood rental motorhome before setting out.

Beach and sun worshippers will not be disappointed, as there are a number of beaches within a short distance of Lakewood. To the west of Lakewood, between Torrance and Inglewood, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach lie side by side; Manhattan Beach has the Strand Bike Path and walking lanes, and numerous volleyball courts right on the beach. Manhattan Beach Pier has a giant aquarium, and there are boutique dining establishments, brunch cafes and pub restaurants almost anywhere you might glance. Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach are all cities, and the latter two are equally as entertaining.

South of Lakewood you will find Alamitos Beach, the actual beach area of the Long Beach suburb.

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Lakewood, there aren’t a lot of places to park it right in town. South of Lakewood, Golden Shore RV Resort near Long Beach has an adults-only hot tub (adults only for safety reasons) and a heated pool. It is within walking distance of the boardwalk and Alamitos Beach.

Seabreeze RV Park is near Seal Beach and welcomes those with military or federal IDs; show your ID and park your Lakewood RV rental here and walk to the beach.

Although there are a minimal amount of private, short-stay RV park options in the area, a scenic drive out to one of the nearby national parks will afford a variety of in-park camping options.

Exploring The City

There are a few golf courses in Lakewood, including Lakewood Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course, and Skylinks at Long Beach, which has Bermuda grass fairways and is one of the sponsors of the Long Beach Open. El Dorado Golf Course, south and east, is home to the Long Beach Open.

Mayfair Park, just north of Lakewood, is a neighborhood recreation center that has facilities vacationers will enjoy. There is a seasonal outdoor pool and playground, basketball courts and lighted fields for football, soccer, lacrosse and other sports. It also hosts carnivals and circuses, car shows and other events; RVers should stop in to see if anything is happening so as not to miss out.

Southeast, along E Carson St and I-65, you will find the Gardens Casino, a mid-size casino with a wide variety of card games on hands (there are no slot machines here). It is open 24/7, and guests can have their food and drinks brought directly to them while they play.
