Lake Wales was first established in 1911-12 and was later incorporated in 1917; in 1925, the completion of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad line connecting Haines City and Everglades City saw the installation of a depot at Lake Wales. Its total area is 20.2 square miles, with 1.26 square miles being water, and it is a member of Polk County.

Despite its small size, Lake Wales boasts some very distinguished celebrities, including Dominique Jones and Amar'e Stoudemire of NBA fame, were both born in Lake Wales; the NFL's Robbie Tobeck (Seattle Seahawks) was born in Lake Wales, and Red Grange of the NFL died in Lake Wales. The city is also home to race car drivers Mario Gosselin (NASCAR) and Walt Faulkner (lived here from 1926 to 1936), and professional baseball players Wade Davis (born here) and Pat Borders (1992 World Series MVP).

Book an RV in Lake Wales as a way to settle in and begin enjoying your vacation, with good home cooked meals and elegant world-class restaurants both at your disposal. Other nearby towns and cities that might prove entertaining are Lakeland, Tampa, Orlando, Lake Placid, and Arcadia.

Discover Lake Wales

The Great Outdoors

Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, just east of Lake Wales, is a good place to begin your outdoor exploration. It is a wildlife management area, 21,000 acres in size, with access to hunting and fishing in a dozen lakes. The geography encompasses shallow lakes associated with marshes, wet prairies, and pine flatwoods. It is home to deer, turkey, wading birds, wintering waterfowl, snail kites, bald eagles and sandhill and whooping cranes, and an ideal outing for wildlife viewing and shutterbugs. Using your camper rental in Lake Wales as a photography blind gives you the perfect opportunity to zoom in on unsuspecting picture prey without being detected.

The Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park is south and east. It's a good area for those who like to view wildflowers as well as wildlife. It is quite remote and therefore undisturbed. Being a dry park, you can expect to see varieties of snakes and insects, so bug spray is strongly recommended as well as water and sunscreen. Allowable activities with the park are hiking, biking, and horseback riding. RVs are allowed in the park, so perhaps consider roughing it for a night or two in your Lake Wales luxury RV rental without the hookups.

RV Parks

Peace Creek RV Park is a few miles out of town and offers amenities like full hookups, pull-through sites, a dump station, restrooms, and laundry facilities. The park is near Lake Annie, a popular spot for boating and fishing. There are also a couple of golf courses nearby, and the scenic Allen David Broussard Catfish Creek Preserve is just 15 miles away.

Lake Wales RV and Campsite has quite a few amenities like full hookups and pull-through sites and offers a variety of recreational activities to enjoy. The grounds are just a few miles from Crooked Lake, one of the top freshwater lakes in Florida.

You can also park the Lake Wales rental camper at Camp’n Aire RV Resort Park and Campground, also near Crooked Lake. This park offers a heated pool, showers, wi-fi, and laundry facilities. The park has multiple events scheduled throughout the year, including potlucks, card game nights, and karaoke.

Bay Bayou RV Resort, in Tampa, is about 75 miles away and puts you close to the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. It has hundreds of sites, all with full hookups (electricity/50 amp, water, and sewer) and wi-fi. Some sites offer big rig access, though there are no pull-through sites. It has a pool and pets are allowed. There are a small number of long-term residents in a section of the park.

Exploring The City

Perhaps your first stop with the rental motorhome in Lake Wales should be to the Bok Tower Gardens, which has a guided tour and a 205-foot singing tower, built by Edward W. Bok. The tower has carillons which play music (hence the phrase “singing tower”) and the garden has a restaurant where you can relax with a drink and snack while enjoying the music.

There are guided tours of the city and surrounding area to choose from, including boat tours, night tours, and nature/wildlife tours, or escape the heat into one of the city’s museums. Those looking for intrigue or a quick thrill should check out Spook Hill, where you can watch your car or someone else's roll uphill. You could even try this with your Lake Wales motorhome rental (just be sure your heart is up to it).

Once you have worked up an appetite and as the day fades, you will be thinking about your evening meal. It's always more interesting to sample the local cuisine, which in Florida would be steakhouse-barbecue and seafood. This state likes its spices and either of these cuisines is where you'll find them. Visitors with children should look for a good family restaurant and there are several of these. One of them offers Greek cuisine on its menu, along with the more familiar American offerings that the children will enjoy. Some of the local establishments are worth checking out for the name alone (you'll know them when you see them). Sleepy-eyed patrons will find a few all-day breakfast spots.

There are also pizza and deli options, and more. Be sure to try a different outlet each night, to get the most out of your experience. Bring leftovers back to your travel trailer rental near Lake Wales to snack on the next day. Enjoy!
