The town of Lahaina lies on the west coast of Maui, Hawaii. During the off-season, it is a relatively small town, however, in peak tourist season, the area’s population swells to well over three times its normal size. Despite the fact that Maui is only about 27 miles across, the roads are notoriously curvy and have large changes in elevation, making it a bit of challenge to get around in some places.

Choosing one of the RV rentals in Lahaina is an excellent way to base yourself in a prime spot for exploring the island, especially for visiting Haleakala National Park. You should be able to take public transportation when visiting other parts of the island. The Maui County public bus system has routes crisscrossing the island, and you can save yourself some hassle when it comes to parking the RV rental in Lahaina if you can time your movements with its schedule.

Discover Lahaina

Getting Outside near Lahaina

One of the closest places to find great outdoor recreation is in the West Maui Forest Reserve. Some of Maui’s best hikes are located in this reserve, with views overlooking the rainforest valley and the ocean off in the distance. For a sandier experience, checks out Launiupoko Beach Park, just down the coast from Lahaina. It has some beautiful sandy beaches with a natural pool enclosed by a lava rock wall, making it the perfect swimming spot for kids. There’s also Iao Valley State Park, one of Maui’s most popular spots offering hiking trails, scenic drives, and views of the iconic Iao Needle.

If a scenic drive is more your thing, check out the Hana Highway, the 65-mile-long coastal highway that stretches from Kahului to Hana. Winding its way through lush volcanic forests, it’s been rated as one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the country.

While it’s not exactly close by Hawaiian standards at a 90-minute drive away, Haleakala National Park is an attraction not to be missed when you rent an RV in Lahaina. The peak for which the park is named is the highest in Hawaii at 10,023 feet. Over 30 miles of trail traverse the mountain, with difficulties ranging from easy strolls of less than half an hour to all-day climbs. Despite the tropical environment at the base of the mountain the summit is quite dry and free of vegetation. It’s one of the most sought-after locations for stargazing too, as the thinner atmosphere leads to less distortion of the stars and planets.

RV Parks Near Lahaina

As is the case on most of the Hawaiian Islands, finding a place to park the RV rental near Lahaina may be a little bit tricky. Camp Olowalu is nearby. Visitors here can park in the parking lot near the beach, though amenities are minimal. You can still make use of the picnic tables, showers, and drinking water on site. Another option would be YMCA Camp Keanae, 55 miles across the island in Haiku. This campground offers“van camping” sites which are grassy spaces with no hookups. However, they do have a gym with basketball and volleyball courts along with fantastic views of the ocean.

If you’d like to expand the options for your Lahaina motorhome rental, you can always choose one the smaller parks nearby, which don’t have organized RV camping, but still permit them if they’re not too large. Papalaua Wayside State Park is just a few miles from Lahaina and has a clearing where an RV could park.

Exploring the City of Lahaina

With the peak tourist season bringing in hordes of potential customers, there’s a wealth of interesting businesses and attractions to explore within the city limits of Lahaina. Need something sweet? Try the local cookie company and their guava-flavored treats. Desperately searching for a pick-me-up? You’ll find plenty of places to nab a fine cup of java. A flavorful cocktail to cap off the evening? There are options here for those, too.

There are a plethora of great entertainment options in Lahaina, from the fantastical illusions of Warren & Annabelle’s Magic to the Beatles tribute band Fourever Fab. But if you really want to experience the Hawaiian culture, take in a show at a local luau where you be greeted with a colorful lei and strong Mai Tai before sitting down to an excellent meal and traditional dance performance.

If you’re up for some exploration with your Lahaina travel trailer rental, make a stop at the Punakea Palms Coconut Farm. There you’ll have the chance to taste coconut water and flesh at different points in the growing process to understand how the fruit changes over time. If you’re just looking for a shady place to relax, make time for your novel under the Banyan tree in town. It’s one of the largest trees in the U.S., planted in 1873 and now standing 60 feet high, with branches stretching over 200 feet.
