Found on the Arkansas River in eastern Colorado, La Junta is a small city with under 10,000 people. Despite its small size, it is the county seat of Otero County, as well as its most populous city. The name for this fabulous town comes from the Spanish word for junction, due to the many roads that intertwine and connect inside its city limits.

Throughout its history, La Junta has changed dramatically, starting as a small fur trading outpost on the frontier, and transitioning to an Air Force base during World War II. La Junta is now a cultured and charming locale and a delightful place to rent an RV. Pueblo is about 60 miles west of La Junta, and Denver is a few hours’ drive north when you book an RV in La Junta and start planning a road trip through the magnificent Centennial State.

Discover La Junta

The Great Outdoors

La Junta is located in the eastern part of Colorado, coincidentally the only part of Colorado that has no mountains. Although there are no mountains, the elevation is over 4,000 feet high, and there are plenty of exceptional parks to visit during your La Junta motorhome rental trip. John Martin Reservoir State Park is so close to town that you could practically walk there. The namesake of the park is a massive human-made lake created when the 100-foot-tall John Martin Dam was built. The lake is one of the largest in all of Colorado by volume, with several campgrounds scattered around its shores ensuring restful nights.

Trinidad Lake State Park is yet another lake-based state park to the south near the border with New Mexico. There you can find long-distance hiking trails like the Santa Fe Trail, and lots of other nature trails to bike on. There are coal mining ruins dating back 100 years or more, along with bird watching areas, lakeside beaches, swimming spots, great fishing, and, of course, space for camping with your La Junta RV rental by owner. Lathrop State Park is close to Trinidad Lake State Park, featuring a few lakes of its own where you can swim, fish, or explore with a boat, canoe, or kayak. There are excellent views of the Rocky Mountains, peaceful campgrounds by the water, and a nine-hole golf course guests can use.

If you want to see one of the state’s more unusual sights, Great Sand Dunes National Park is a mind-blowing park on the other side of Pueblo with jaw-dropping scenery. The Rocky Mountains provide a sublime backdrop for the park's famous dunes, a strange and out-of-place sea of sand resembling the Sahara Desert. Guests can hike around the park, take epic photos, or even sandboard down the dunes. There are even camping opportunities in the park should you choose to stay the night with the La Junta camper rental.

RV Parks

When you rent an RV in La Junta, you will need a place to park your RV for the night. Fowler RV Park is one place worth looking into, with hot showers, laundry facilities, restrooms, pet areas, and a playground. Next door, there is a nine-hole golf course and a swimming pool open to the public.

La Junta KOA belongs to a national chain of campgrounds and offers amenities like a mini-golf course, a swimming pool, badminton and volleyball courts, and a recreation room.

Lakeview RV Park and Campground is a family owned park by the John Martin Reservoir, with its own camp shop for camping supplies, groceries, boating gear, and fishing items. This lakeside campground has stunning views.

City Sightseeing

La Junta has quite a vibrant community, with beautiful brick buildings, gorgeous city parks, breweries, restaurants, boutiques, and shopping centers. History lovers always appreciate Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, a remnant of the Old Santa Fe Trail. This rebuilt fort was once home to fur trappers, traders, artisans, cowboys, and outlaws, a real mixing pot, to say the least. This beautiful fort by the river oozes history, and when you tour its grounds, you really get a feel for pioneer life back in the day.

Otero Museum and Koshare Indian Museum are the town’s two main institutes where you can learn about the complex history of the area and the tribes who lived there before the settlers arrived. Koshare Indian Museum has an astounding collection of artwork and artifacts tracing back to the local native people, with elegant costumes and items dating back hundreds of years. The museum was saved from closure by the Boy Scouts troop in town. Otero Museum is a depository for artifacts from all over Otero County, with old stage coaches, revolvers, and other unique items from the past.

The town’s Fox Theatre is an old retrofitted movie house that has been refurbished to show movies. The small but intimate movie space still plays both modern and old classic films.
