Located within Prince George’s County is Joint Base Andrews. This military facility was formed in 1945 and serves under the Air Force. Besides being a training facility for military personnel, it also offers private family homes.

The base is best known for housing Air Force One, the President’s private plane. Joint Base Andrews is situated near many major cities, including Clinton, Washington D.C., and Alexandria.

The Great Outdoors

If you’re a nature lover, you’ll be sure to find plenty of outdoor destinations to take your RV rental from Joint Base Andrews to. Located next to the base is the Suitland Bog Natural Area. This large park features many trails which will take hikers by rare carnivorous plants. There are also a few interpretive programs along the trails designed to teach guests about the ecology of the land.

You could also take your motorhome rental from Joint Base Andrews on a short drive to Alexandria to Jones Point Park. Situated beside the Potomac River, the park is filled with winding trails and gardens. There are a handful of interpretive stops along the trails which teach guests more about local Native American history. There’s also the Jones Point Lighthouse, built in 1855, which is one of the last riverine lighthouses in the state. The park offers canoe rentals and is perfect for fishing, especially for catfish.

There’s also Rosaryville State Park to be considered. The park was formed in 1976 and covers 982 acres. It offers plenty of trails for walking, biking, and horseback riding, some of which will take you by the iconic Mt. Airy Mansion. This mansion is one of the oldest mansions in Maryland and was once visited by George Washington. Tours are available of the interior although tickets are necessary.

If you’re looking to book an RV near Joint Base Andrews, there are a few options available. The Joint Base Andrews FamCamp is located directly next to the base. It requires reservations and is only opened for those who are active or retired military personnel. While small, the campground offers quite a few amenities, such as WiFi, sewer, water, a snack bar, and golf course.

Another option to keep your travel trailer rental from Joint Base Andrews at is the Port Tobacco RV Resort. This resort runs over seven acres long and offers 85 sites which have waterfront views. Some amenities here include private boat docks, a playground, clubhouse, electric, and water.

A short drive away from the base is Cedarville State Forest. The forest spans over 3,000 acres and offers plenty of outdoor activities, like walking/biking trails, kayaking and fishing spots, and birdwatching. While there aren’t many amenities available (there are showers and restrooms), the campground does have spacious sites.

Exploring the City

Thanks to the base’s location, it’s near many popular destinations that you could drive your rental RV rental too. His Lordship’s Kindness Museum is situated within Prince George’s County, making it a quick and easy drive. Also called Poplar Hill, this plantation was built in 1786 for Robert Darnall. It covers over 150 acres which includes gardens and stables. Tours can be taken of the interior where you’ll be able to view antiques and historic architecture. There are also a few exhibits inside which tell more about the plantation’s intricate history.

Another destination for your camper rental from Joint Base Andrews is the Torpedo Factory Center. Located in Old Town Alexandria, this art center overlooks the Potomac River and is situated inside what was once a naval torpedo factory. It has over three floors, which include various galleries and artist workspaces to explore. In fact, you can watch and talk to many of the artists and buy their works. There’s also a small archaeology museum inside which contains artifacts found during excavations in the city.

Directly across the street from the Torpedo Factory Center is the Carlyle House Historic Park. This mansion was built in 1752 and offers tours throughout the week of its interior. There are also gardens on its grounds with many different types of flowers and trees from the 18th-century to help recreate what it was once like. Occasionally, the mansion will also host events, such as costumed interpreters visiting the grounds.

A few minutes away in Washington D.C. is the National Gallery of Art. This art museum is one of the nation’s largest and contains many different collections which range from pieces by Tintoretto to Jackson Pollock. Besides viewing the art, sometimes you might also be able to attend book signings or watch artists at work recreating famous pieces. The museum is connected to a sculpture garden which also has a cafe. A perfect place to cap off a fun-filled afternoon with family.
